I ordered a Chicken Taco (No Lettuce) for $2.10. The Cheese was good, the Taco Shell was crunchy and there was a good amount of Chicken. The Chicken was not White Meat. This Drive Thru serves good portions and hopefully will one day offer White Meat Chicken in their Chicken Taco.

I shouldn't come here as much as I do, but I do.

This place has the best carne asada nachos I've ever gotten my hungry little paws on. I've eaten here more times than I can count. Usually, I get a half order of carne asada nachos or carne asada fries. Both are unquestionably satisfying. They're both layered with the same toppings: beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, melted cheese, and carne asada. The half order is perfect for one person (I've never ordered the full order, but I hear it's huge). The horchata here is also pretty great, not grainy, not too sweet, not watered down...it's seriously juuuust right. I'd say the only qualm about this place is that it's CASH ONLY. Really, Alerto's? In the 21st century? Sure, there's an ATM inside, but who wants to pay an extra fee to withdraw money?! It's usually not a big deal for me because I remember to bring cash, but once, I was about 50 cents short...I had to drive home to get 50 cents for my beloved nachos. Sadness :( Regardless, I love coming here for a yummy $8ish dollar meal of carne asada nachos (or fries) and a horchata. Btw, there's parking's in the back. There's handicapped parking in the front, but it seems to be taken over by dumb, inconsiderate jerks who don't give a rat's butt about actual handicapped people. Seriously. The last time I was here, I saw FOUR violations in 15 minutes: 2 people parked in handicapped spots without a placard, 1 parked in the blue "no parking" crossed section, and 1 wasn't even parked in a spot...he just ditched his car right in front of the restaurant. I normally wouldn't be pissed, but I came here ACTUALLY HANDICAPPED and had to park in the back. Hey Alerto's, you gotta regulate!

If you are looking for greasy, tasty, not good for you in any way whatsoever (i mean this all in the best possible way) Mexican food, this is the jackpot. The super fries are freaking awesome and the breakfast burritos are pretty impressive as well. Minus one star for the small parking lot and super long lines at lunch, but other than that, this place is hangover heaven.

ive driven past this place for about 10 yrs and never stopped here. One afternoon last week i did and to my pleasant surprise the food was very, very good. I had a burrito and i will for sure be back for another... Customer service was pleasant.

Consistently good food. Truly can't go wrong getting the carnitas, carne asada or taquitos here. The Nachos are also great when eating in their little dining area. They only accept cash, so be prepared or spend the extra few bucks on the atm inside. My son likes their cheese enchiladas too. If you enjoy Mexican food, the this place is definitely Recommended.

Greatest carne asada fries I've ever had, for the price of $7 you get basically everything and a lot more. Comes with a load of fries and a lot of guacamole, tomatoes, a ton of onions and cilantro. I recommend getting a lot of salsa and hot sauce for it because not all of the french fries are going to get covered. Also their breakfast burritos are another steal. Loaded up with eggs, potatoes, and bacon or ham its definitely worth your money. I would recommend sharing if you were gonna get a large anything here. Not exactly super fast though, so be forewarned when you order anything here that it will take a minimum of 10 mins to get ready.

Alerto's isn't the most authentic Mexican food joint but they offer some delicious choices. Whatever you do get though make sure you use their hot sauce because it makes the food even better. I always opt for their burritos or carne Assad fries. The location offers really late hours if you want food late at night.

there's not much more that i can say that others havent already said about Alerto's. ive been to hundreds. literally...hundreds of taquerias all over the world, and the consistency you get at Alerto's is right up there with any place. the Cali Burrito. when i took the first bite of a Cali Burrito...............i started swearing. "f*cking, motherf*cker! how come this is so f*cking good!?!?!?" being that i live in norcal, the last time i had Alerto's, i bought extra to take back home. there have been several who have tried to duplicate Alerto's Cali Burrito, but sadly all have come short. nothing like it. best fast food mexican ever. you hear me? EVERRRRRRR!

Came here after seeing other yelpers extoll the virtues of Alerto's carne asada fries, and they definitely lived up to the hype. A half order was still huge and I could barely finish it. Definitely a legit small mexican food place, I'll be going here again.

  • Larry R.

the burritos are huge and you wont find anything better for your money. everything is fresh and I have yet to find a better place for Mexican food. overall this is my favorite place to eat. the super nachos and the shrimp burrito are my favorites. they have all the typical Mexican dishes you can think of. all at a very good price and big portions to fill you up. you cant beat this place.

  • Shantel P.

The food here is awesome!! They fill the burritos with a lot of meat (compared to other places who give mostly rice and beans) and they are so delish!!! I love their carne asada nachos! If you want to hype up your taste buds I would order a side of chiles gueros. They are grilled with salt and lemon and taste sooooo good! I don't think they are on the menu but you can order them and they are free =) The down sides to this place are 1. they only take cash and 2. if you go in the afternoon there might not be a place to sit. They do have an ATM in the restaurant but it does charge. And if you are privileged, like i am, to have B of A, there is another fee added for using a non Bof A machine. Boo!

I have been coming here since 1996, fewer as the years gone. Still a great place for a quick bite.

The last thing I had from here was a asada taco salad... so damn good! I will be going back tonight! lol

This place is delicious! If you are looking for inexpensive, authentic Mexican fast food, then this is the place. Del taco has NOTHING on Alerto's. the chicken tacos are $2 each so extremely affordable and they give you so much meat it is filled to the top of the tortilla! Also, do not forgo the salsa bar as the salsa is tasty and scrumptious! My only complaint is that the setup of the restaurant is a bit small and the chairs and not very comfortable. Although, this is not a posh place aesthetically, the quality of the food outnumbers any small eccentricities.

Alertos. Rolled tacos. Nachos. Since high school. Edit: horrible. The food was bland and undercooked. We got the wrong items even though we repeated the order 3 times! The guy at the window acted like he had better things to do (let's be honest, Guy... You can't get a 2 item order correct. There's nothing better out there for you). Never going to Alertos again unless I'm desperate at 2am. Maybe not even then.

    (1)
  • Matthew M.

Drunk and hungry! Carne asada quesadilla never fails me! Something was a tad off though regarding flavor and it was greasy on the outside. I like the Alertos better by Edinger but this Alertos still did the job!

    (3)
  • Pete G.

The drive thru can suck, but the food is delisious Damas y Caballeros! The carne asada burritos are legendary, they have nachos, rolled tacos, and a whole lot of other tasty Mexican food to chose from. This is the only place I like the Horchata as well. Sometimes on the way to work I'd pick up three or four breakfast burritos to share with my coworkers. Now they want me to run for President!

  • Greg S.

Carne asada fries...truly one of God's culinary gifts to the world! Alertos does it right, although the price of $8.50 does seem a bit steep. But who am I to argue when it's not every day I get to indulge like this!

As a college student in SD, many nights are filled with trips to Vallartas, Rigoberto's, Cotixan, or some other place with a good fix of Mexican food. Everyone rages about how AWESOME carne asada fries are in SD, but college friends who lived near Orange County always said that Alertos carne asada fries were better, and I had always been wanting to try it, and I FINALLY satisfied my cravings today. Okay, let's cut to the chase. Carne Asada Fries aka Super Fries It comes in two sizes, the half order for 6.15, or the full order for 8.50. The fries are fluffy, if you get what I mean, and were larger than I expected. Thus, it made me thirsty quickly. I like my fries a bit more firm, but that's my personal preference. I like how they have so much stuff!! Guac, cheese, tomatoes, onions, sour cream, more cheese, cilantro, beans. 5 stars Chicken burrito My high school clubs always ordered Alertos' burritos for International Week, but it's really bland. If I remember correctly, it's just the chicken and the wrap. Again, I like a lot of "stuff" in my burritos, and not a butt load of meat. Even the "plain" ones in SD taste better. 3 stars In the end, which ones taste better? Carne Asada Fries: Alertos Burritos: SD And yes, only accepting cash can be a pain, too, but they do have an ATM available for your use.

  • Lucas M.

I usually go with the breakfast burritos because they are delicious. If I venture outside of my comfort zone I go with the carne asada fries, which are also tasty. Also one of the only places I know that still has Mr. Pibb.

  • Jarrod F.

Alertos is always a good late night food choice for anyone craving OK Mexican food. I don't think you can go wrong with the carne asada fries or nachos; also their breakfast burritos are pretty good. My least favorite meats from Alertos is their carnitas, which I think lacks flavor and it always tends to be overly greasy. I usually get the carne asada or chorizo and never have had any problems. I enjoy their red sauce, but I don't understand why they will give you 100 small plastic containers of it and not just give you a couple larger sized containers. I think that would save on all the wasted plastic. Basically it is a great spot for late night munchies after going to main street Huntington Beach, you can never complain after a couple drinks.

Since leaving California I still dream about my late night chile relleno burrito outings. Tex mex doesn't come close to Alertos goodness. Please come to me Alertos. Everything could be even bigger in Texas with you here. Especially my bootie but it'd be worth it. Ohwell, darnit. Maybe I'm better off this way. Regardless, I miss you lover. Your fries, salsa, huge portions. Sooo swoon worthy.

  • Steph Y.

The carne asada nachos are really good! The half-size is more than plentiful for two people, I can't even imagine trying to tackle the full-size!

The carne asada fries are great!!! Keep it up! By the way, the bean burrito is AWESOME!!!

  • R K.

My wife and I went here the other day for lunch. It's a little hole in the wall, but does a lot of business in the drive thru. I ordered the Carne Asada nachos and my wife ordered a bean and cheese burritos. The prices are a little more than Del Taco or Taco Bell, but the portions and quality of the food definitely make the prices worth it. The food it fresh and cooked to order. The salsa is also homemade and tastes great. The portions are very large. I didn't finish my nachos which next time I'll order a 1/2 order. Overall I would give it 5 stars but the cashier wasn't really interested in helping anyone as she did the very minimum to help you and didn't really smile. Don't let this deter you from checking this place out. It's fast food so don't worry about the cashier, worry about the food...and that's what keeps me coming back.

Holy cow! I eat a lot and I ordered a #10 Chorizo combo with a drink and I could not finish it (shared some with my 15 month old who also eats like a cow). It was so much food for $10! picked it up at the drive through and drove to Huntington Beach and it was still piping hot when we ate it. It was also super delicious - wish I had tried the carne asada - maybe next time I'm in socal.

I've waited quite some time to write this particular review in order to wait for the specific words. The problem is that, after having just (moments ago) finished a delicious California burrito and Carne Asada taco from Alerto's I am fat, happy, and without the poetic license to creatively and effectively churn out the wonderfully descriptive and tantalizingly poignant explainations of the manner for which I love this divey little drive thru. Their meat is tender and their prices are easy on the bank. The only pain in the ass is the CASH ONLY policy. Oh well... I'm sure even Jesus had his negative points... If you've never checked out Alerto's... What's takin' you so long? Get your ass down there and load up on some wicked grub and render yourself unable to find a decently written review within you with two hands and a flashlight!

  • Christine N.

There are two of these locations on the same street and this one is better than the other. Their carne asada fries are the best and one order is enough for 2-3 people to grub on. Their rolled tacos and horchata aren't too bad here either. They're also known for their breakfast burritos!

  • Amy K.

I generally avoid mom n' pop Mexican joints because they're more likely to be authentic; authentic=lard=not vegetarian. Usually the most authentic I go is Del Taco, but I was assured by the vegan who brought me to Alertos that he had been told both the rice and beans were free of animal products. Well then, bring it! For a mere $3.85, I received a giant, delicious veggie burrito, stuffed with beans and rice, grilled peppers and onions, fresh veggies, and plenty of guacamole (I nixed the sour cream and cheese), all wrapped in one of the better tortillas I've ever had. The hot sauce that came with the burrito was perfect for me (which means those of you who really like spicy stuff will likely find it weak). We hadn't grabbed anything from the salsa bar before we'd left, but next time, I'm definitely going to try a couple kinds. This is the sort of burrito I can't envision getting tired of.

I have been coming here for years and years and years (and years) and they have consistently had the best cheap, quick, craving-satisfying Mexican food around! I have never, not once, been disappointed with anything I've ordered here; my favorites including the carne asada super nachos or the taquitos (chicken or beef, both delicious). Omg and before I forget, their horchata is hands-down the best horchata I have found anywhere! Seriously, trust me on the horchata, my boyfriend is Mexican and we have been all over Santa Ana trying to find better horchata and we just haven't. Basically, their food is good, the nachos and horchata are tops; just eat here already, you won't be sad you did. :)

I grew up in San Diego so I can be very particular with my Mexican food. I almost never eat it unless I'm in SD. But when the craving strikes I risk trying new places to find one that most resembles SD Mexican food. I'm happy to report that Alertos comes pretty close. I usually judge a Mexican restaurant by its carne asada burrito but I was craving the fries so I ordered their "super fries" aka carne asada fries. I had read on Yelp reviews that it has beans (ew) so I asked for it on the side. YUM. The serving size is pretty large so I couldn't finish it on my own, but for the price it had better be a large portion because it was a little more than what I'm used to spending on Mexican food (I'm spoiled by cheap but delicious Mexican food). I would definitely come back again next time I'm craving some South of the border goodness!

    (4)
  • Katrina Y.

I was only able to finish half of my carne asada burrito but dang, this place was delicious. I also sampled some of my brother's carne asada fries, and I definitely think they're better than Albatross'! This place is inexpensive and I'm glad too--I foresee lots of future visits!

This is the most consistent, delicious Mexican food within 20 miles of my house. Everything that I've ever tasted here has been excellent. Even their $1.40 side order of French fries is bomb. They also have the best iced tea in Orange County.

I'm Mexican. First generation, in fact. I know Mexican food. Real, homemade Mexican Food. I was enthused to find a local spot that was reviewed so well. We live .5 mile away for about 8 months but purposely had avoided it in order to not face disappointment. I looked at the reviewer names/profile pics and saw few Mexicans submitting those reviews. I should have know. This is not racial discrimination, just an observation. What an utterly sad and disappointing meal. It was meh...all the way. We got the carne asada fries and an adobada torta. My hubby went to get the food and he was so mad when he arrived home. Mind you, this is a nice, easy going guy. He was treated very rudely by the 2 employees and was furious. Now, this is something I may tolerate if the food is THAT good. My hubby is mid-western white and has since been schooled in the deliciousness of authentic Mexican food. So, we open the box and it looks ok. Pretty much like carne asada should look like with layers of dressings underneath. The fries are soft which we like, there is real crema in there (not sour cream), so it was a surprise when I take a bite and need salt. Another bite...need more salt. This is bland! Mexican food is anything but bland. Somehow, Alertos has made carne asada fries have little flavor. Now, I like salt and food with seasoning. I can admit that. But my hubby sinks his teeth into his torta and I say, "Bland"? He nods and says, "Yup, just like the fries." Hm, so it isn't just me! He added salsa and said, "Ok, that helped it a lot." Mexican food should stand on it's own with taste and rich flavors. No salsa, lemon or salt needed. Of course, it enhances it but should not require it. Are you looking for authentic flavors at a good price? Head over to El Ranchito Market on Westminster and Springdale. Head to the back of the nicely stocked and clean store and there awaits a variety of delicious meats that can be made into tacos, tortas, you name it. There are tables and chairs and a flat screen to watch while you enjoy the REAL enchilada :) One thing I would eat at Alertos? Plain fries...go figure...a Mexican joint that makes good fries but not good Mexican food. Sigh!

I broke down yesterday and decided to try the super fries. Holy amazing. Enough food for two... and SO delicious! I havent ever had a bad thing here. The carne asada tacos, carne asada burrito, breakfast burrito, chicken tacos... ALL of it has been amazing. Their salsa is delicious and they dont cheat you either, they give you a lot and more when you ask. Their tacos have SO much lettuce on top... I love lettuce.... I wish I could get the breakfast burritos from here for my work for Friday breakfasts but since its cash only, its not an option. Bummer.

I've been going to this place for years. Though I've tried many items on the menu out of curiosity, the staple order for me are the chicken burritos. These satisfy my carnivore cravings as they are packed with thick chunks of moist and tender chicken that have been simmered in a mildly spicy tomato sauce. Before coming to this place I would time and time again be disappointed in the chicken burritos I would order from other Mexican restaurants. It's not that they were necessarily bad, it's just that there was barely any chicken in them. A low point was a "chicken" taco from Taco Bell, filled with a few small flavorless rubbery pieces of what I assume was their version of chicken. All packed under what looked to be a lettuce taco (I don't think this is actually on their menu). Finally, someone recommended this place, telling me that their chicken burritos were ALL chicken and no filler. Ever since that first time, I've been a regular customer since. Though these burritos are perfect just on their own, I love drowning every bite in salsa for that extra kick. If you like chicken tacos with chicken in them, they serve them stuffed as well and they're excellent. I love the traditional (and less healthy) hard shells on these. This is the way my mom used to prepare taco shells when I was a kid. The breakfast burritos are great too and they prepare and serve them all day and night. They customize all your orders as well. No potatoes in mine. My other favorite is the carnitas burrito. The only problem is they overkill on the amount of guacamole on these, to the point that it overrides and mutes out all of the flavor dynamics. I thought this was a one time accident or perhaps the result of an overzealous server, but after ordering it a few different times over a wide time span I quickly realized that this was how they were made. Once again though, I was able to customize the order to get it served without guacamole and it was perfect. Now I can enjoy all of the flavor of the mildly seasoned tender shredded pork topped with pico de gallo. These are seriously good and pretty rich to eat so I only get them on occasion. I have to customize the chicken fajitas burritos as well due to the same problem of overkill, this time with the monterey jack cheese being the culprit in muting out all of the flavor. Ordered without the cheese, the way I like it, they're very good and served sizzling hot, though due to the nature in which fajitas are cooked, tend to be slightly greasy. I always use the drive thru and have rarely had a problem with an order. The only two times I did were with a new girl at the window (same girl both times) and I don't recall ever seeing her again. Whenever there is a long line, they manage to get me through to the window in a relatively short period of time. The prices and value at Alerto's are great due to the fact that they are not a major corporate chain spending millions of dollars annually on advertising and infrastructure. They don't need to do that either. This place is small (as is the entire chain) but always busy because people know it's a great place to go.

The best fast food burritos i've ever had. The carne asada with extra sour cream, california burrito, and the carne asada fries are amazing. Alertos will always make you full and satisfied. This is the perfect place to go to after a hard workout!

I have been coming to this place for years and it always delivers. Yes, things will be greasy from time to time but they always deliver on carne asade and chicken burritos as well as taquitos with guacamole. This is a great place for fast, cheap REAL mexican food and not the Del Taco version.

  • Michelle M.

Great location and open late. Order carne asada burritos. If you have several people eating with you order the carne asada nachos. Depending on your appetite usually up to 3-4 people can share this. Great place after a night of drinking :)

  • Tracie L.

CARNE ASADA BURRITO!! Love the amount of carne asada they put in it and it's not too greasy :D perfect ratio of pico de gallo and all the flavors blend together well. Their carne asada isn't dry and they are big pieces. $4.95 is well worth it, screw those little 99 cent del taco deals

  • Jean J.

I love this place. Whenever I'm in Anaheim, I want Alertos. I order one thing and one thing only: CARNE ASADA BURRITO. It is delicious and a huge bang for your buck. It is packed full of meat. Just the way I like it. I usually go for the guacamolillo suace because I feel like it enhances the flavor of the burrito. It really does fill you up. Not to mention that it is a great bang for your buck because you can get a carne asada burritio for $4.95! The Carne Asada Fries are pretty damn good, if i say so myself. You can share it comfortably with 3-4 people. Another thing to note: CASH ONLY! They do have an atm inside, but everyone knows those things charge you extra $$ to just withdraw money. So have cash ready if you're going to go to this place.

I got excited after reading a review someone posted comparing the Carne Fries to San Diego since I'm from San Diego, just staying out here temporarily. After the first bite I knew I wasn't going to like the fries much. They use the thick choking type fries. I prefer the smaller, crispier fries. For $8.45 you don't really get much either, although I got them without beans and guacomole. I only order Carne Asada fries or California burritos when I get mexican. I won't ever try a burrito from here since I saw the size of their burritos while waiting for my order. On to the next trying to find a place comparable to San Diego. Smh. Two foods I can't find out here comparable to San Diego: Carne Asada Fries and Salt And Pepper Chicken Wings. :(

Have been coming here sense high school and still love every bite. Today I bright my 6 year old and I got my car a Assad burrito witch is to die for and she had a quesadilla and a side of rice and it's all gone so I'm sure she loved it. Thank you Alertos we

I think I ate more of Pinky's food than my own, and that he let me oughtta be a sign of bad food all around. The Alertos down the street in Westminster is at least 2 stars better, but this THIS place is a crime against humanity. I had the Machaca Plate, all egg and diced tomato, beef was barely visible because it was barely there. He had Carne Asada Tacos and the beef was a lil dry for my taste, and now I feel bad we left DTLA to eat at this hole in OC :(( apologies, Pinky, sincerest.

This place becomes my favorite midnight snack place. They open until 2 am, awesome service and the chef cooks with sonic speed. The price is awesome and even comes with a drive through. Carne asada fries: Defintely enough calories for three meals. It packs with every topping sour cream, salsa, guacamole, extremely tender carne asada and crispy fries. 4/5 stars Chimichanga: packed with tender shread beef and covers with red sauce. Very delicious for 6 bucks. 5/5 stars for me. Carne asada quesadrilla: just meat and cheese. Very greasy, but stills tastes good with hot chilly 3/5 stars for me

I do love their burritos. Can't remember if they have it on the menu or if I hallucinated it but at some point I started ordering bean burritos with fries inside of them and they happily oblige. Only down side is that drive thru can take a solid 10 minutes after ordering if there's no line, but it's not Taco Bell-slap-it-together food either, so I get it.

Three words: Carne Asada Burrito Three more words: Adobada Super Fries Three last words: Homemade hot sauce This place has it down. They're open almost 24/7 (I say almost because they used to close from 4am-6am, haven't checked lately), they make simple, authentic, flavorful Mexican food, and it is so easy to become a repeat customer here. I would rather pay $5 for the carne asada burrito here (tender, fresh-made, stretchy flour tortilla/ lean, grilled, marinated carne asada/ chunky guacamole/ plentiful pico de gallo) than any trendy burrito-bar chain that piles it on with rice and beans to distract from that amazing beef flavor. Alertos' staff is friendly, they take cash or card (but still have an ATM from the dark-age cash only days), and the drive thru & phone ordering options are just as quick as in-person. Also, ask for the cold bottle of house hot sauce they keep behind the counter - a perfect complement to any burrito, taco, or appetizer option you can find on the menu.

Food is fast, affordable, large portions and just down right delicious here! I've had a good variety of menu items like fish burritos, mini tacos, carne asada fries/nachos, breakfasts, desserts and my beloved California Burrito! Not quite as good back home in San Diego but everything else on the menu is on point! There's even a drive thru, and they open late. Definitely give this place a try. It'll be worth the 4 miles you have to run at Mile Square Park after you've eaten here lol :D

Craving Carne Asada fries or a California Burrito at 2something AM when most places are closed? This is the place to go! Either through the drive thru or if everyone is too lazy or intoxicated to drive, through postmates. They load up the burritos with A LOT of meat and the fries with all the toppings possible. This place definitely does not skimp out - more bang for your buck. Pro Tip: Get the picked carrots and jalapenos on the side. I personally do not like the beans in the carne asada fries, so if you don't either - ask for no beans!

Hungry in the AM? The PM? The late night/early morning? Well come to Alertos for a delicious order of a carne asada burrito or my fav, carne asada fries full order and HOLD THEM BEANS! Been coming here for the past 10 years (or maybe more but let's stick with 10) and the food always meets my expectations as well as hitting the spot which says a lot cause I got a black hole as my tummy. Coming here for late night snacks especially after working out, work, or drinking is bomb! Don't forget to ask for extra hot sauce and pico de gallo to top off your order. The only downsides of this location is that the indoor seating is not too accommodating during rush hours and that the drive thru is poorly designed and has cars stretching out all the way by KFC. Also, they started accepting credit cards so they're no longer cash only if you purchase over $5!

I just realized that I gave 4 stars haha I meant to give 5! That's a no brainer. Everything I've had from this place never disappoints from their breakfast burrito to their carne asada fries to the flautas! I've never had the desserts, I've just never been a huge fan of flan, but my friend said the churros are good which I most definitely believe! Who doesn't like churros?

My first review of this restaurant was 2 stars but I've upgraded to a 4 star now. At first I tried the Carne Asada but I've come back and had the Carnitas and other items like the Chile Rellenos. Everything is much better now... except the carne asada is just OK. For some reason it's dry and uninspiring. They should revise their beef supplier or cooking methods for that meat. Everything else is great though and I will keep coming back. Try the fried chiles.

**UPDATE** As a California Burrito connoisseur I'm surprised it took me this long to sample le goods. All I can say is disappointed! No guac, dry carne asada, and lackluster fries. Not to mention a pit grease waiting for me at the bottom of the burrito. As far as California Burritos in OC go: 1. Cali tacos 2. Robertos 3. Alertos 4. Alberto's

I think everybody that visit this place knows that the super fries aka carne asada fries is so good I almost ate it all I was so full great place wasn't busy food was fast and came out hot which is a plus for me if you haven't been must try.

I don't understand the 4 star rating about this place lol I ordered the #8 combo (2 Carne Asada tacos comes with rice and beans ~$8-9), one fish taco ($3 something) , and horchata (~$2) The tacos were huge .. I wasn't expecting that at all but it explains the prices. The Carne Asada was dry as hell. It was such a turn off. The guacamole looked old was definitely tasteless. Pico de Gayo was nothing special. The rice and beans look prepacked/old. The whole plate was nothing special and I'm so mad I paid that much for it! Fish taco was ginormous I thought it was a mini burrito.. Lots and lots of cabbage. The fish wasn't crispy and the breading was thin and soggy.. Service is whatever's here nothing special. I could have gotten tacos from Del Taco next door and been more content with my meal lol (and it would've costed me WAY less.) I won't be coming back for the food but maybe for the horchata :(

I will have to go with nope. Driven by many times. Next time will keep driving The outside is beat up and the inside is only slightly better. Limited seating probably about 30 people. The food was not good. Had asada taco, carnitas taco, pollo asado taco. Carnitas was a brick of meat. Very porkie. No sauce. Did not enjoy. Pollo asado was ok. Asada was dry and over cooked. Everything was super greasy/ oily. For the price, overpriced. $3.19 per taco. Nope

Can u say "Fish burrito?" "....Fish burrito..., now what?" "Now we go T-Rex on it!" Also their mixed burrito is the best I've had outside of San Diego. It might be unconventional if you've never had it before. But give it a try... and don't burn your mouth. Of course don't sleep on the carne asada nachos/fries. A must for the late night munchies.

My favorite place to get adobada fries! Whenever I get the chance, we always stop here. Fair prices and the portions are more than enough! I've always shared the fries with my friends but you could also do half sizes of it. I usually get it without beans bc I'm not a big fan of it and you could have the sour cream on the side if you want since they put a grip load on it. (I don't mind haha) They do take card, but there is a $5 minimum. Theres an ATM inside but ya know, it costs money! haha.

3 because: they need to b way more generous with the salsa. Rationing out salsa cups? Uh. No. Hardly any pickled carrots and jalapeños? No. Hell nooo! I know this isn't santa ana or mexico or los angeles for that matter. But goodness. Unlimited salsa bar of some caliber is important! Well it hits the spot for a midnight run, when no one else is open. Otherwise, I'd drive to santa ana, if i weren't tired. Ugh..

I like this place a lot...its one of those better than usual standard Mexican establishments. There are three things I love about this place: #1) The carne asada fries (you can order a half portion for a cheaper price and they still give you enough to share with two people). It comes with guacamole too! #2) The carnitas burrito (or any carnitas product for that matter) #3) The guacamole salsa...super yummy

Great food, great service, across the street from my job, what else can i ask for. The staff is really nice and are really fast. The Tacos Dorados (hard shell tacos) are the bomb and the Carnitas Quesadilla are great too! Great little spot to go to.

My new cardiac arrest meal when I cheat on my cheat meals...you have been warned! If you like the Adobada burrito and Carne Asada Super Fries....well try ordering this: Adobada Super Fries (full order if you are really hungry or sharing) with fries cooked well done/extra crispy (upon request) and I prefer no beans as well (cause I'm obviously watching what I eat and my health). Put some hot sauce and devour! Consider yourself an official happy glut! Feel free to comment me your feedback...your arteries will not thank me. Enjoy!

I absolutely love this place. When I first moved to HB from a spot with authentic Mex food I was sooo disappointed as Del seemed to be the closest option. Then a neighbor suggested Alertos. It's def a local spot although they are starting to grow. Always pleased. They do a great job. The service is the only reason why I didn't give 5 stars. It's decent but I really think they could take their business several steps further if they put some effort into the service piece. Other than that this place is legit. Would recommend to anyone in the area.

A-Ok! The plus side- cheap eats that taste good. The down side - little greasy. My tummy was not happy about all the extra greasy-ness. However, the taste is nonetheless yummy. I got the chicken fajita burrito and shared the carne asada steak fries. Lots of guacamole and steak!! Family enjoyed their food, especially the price. Also horchata was very good. But they charge for refills - .85 cents!! what is that all about? Anyway, I will be back when I have another cheat meal in my future.

I really love the potato tacos as well as the chips and guacamole. Breakfast burritos are big and really hit the spot in the mornings as well. So I order my tacos today, the cashier was fairly rude as they all are, and I go get my salsas and drink. Only other customer there was a geezer mowing down his lunch. He jams in the final bite, then rips a fart and leaves. Just in time for my order to arrive. Anywho, not Alerto's fault the guy couldn't even make it outside before the inevitable happened. But if the employees smile and take the orders like they want to be there, that would improve things a lot.

my new obsession are the super fries. it comes with half or a full order. I don't know why but the half orders come with bigger fries and the full size comes with small fries. I can't eat a full order so I get half order and ask for the small fries. sooooo gooodddd!! I also like their horchata

Its a small, quiet mom and pop place, that hasn't been pushed around by its predecessors. Thank goodness for pure and made ready to order food Alertos!!. I want to do the hat dance with you :-) A mild hunger pain was torturing me after working the longest shift in the world, so luckily, Alertos wasn't too far from my grasp. The hubbster picked me up and we headed down Brookhurst. Found the spot, thought about parking and dining in, but saw a drive thru instead. Awesome. I had heard legends about the Carne Asada Super Fries and went with the 1/2 order to go. Good thinking to go with just the half, it was super plenty!! Hubbster went with the Carne Asada Burrito and we washed it down with 2 orders of Medium sized Agua de Jamaica. Muy Delicioso! The flavors of the beef, guac and seasonings was perfect. My hunger was satisfied, and it was authentic enough to where I was pleased. Perks: Hefty portions for the $. Dine in or drive thru. Salsa is very tasty with the meals, Menu is super inviting to come back and try more! Desserts are available too. KNOW before you GO: The drive thru is tricky. Once you turn in from Brookhurst go straight to the back and then you will see the entry way to the drive thru. Don't go to the right of the building, there is no drive thru entry. It looks like they do take debit cards now, but bring cash just in case. OverALL: I am in love with you Alertos. My husband is too. This is simply a foodie love affair. We will be back for more!

California burrito with added sour cream... Holy cow... Delicious! Anytime I'm craving that, I will be back! I was the only car in the drive thru at 8am and it took about 8 minutes from start to finish.

The food is absolutely amazing, love the super fries. 4 stars for the food, and 0 stars for the creepy cook that stares at you and makes you feel uncomfortable while ordering. Had to double check to see if I had my clothes on. Anywho, I'd recommend going through drive thru.

Alerto's: home of the wonderful artery clogging, heart-stopping Mexican food that'll surely satisfy your late night munchies. I used to go here all the time in high school. The Carne Asada Super Fries are definitely worth getting, and are seriously the epitome of pure, unadulterated bliss. Definitely eat this with no ragrets. Yup. You get a heaping ton of fries, topped off with a beautiful amount of carne asada, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, and cheese (I eat them sans beans oops). Eat this with ketchup on the side, and you've got the best thing in the world. It's about somewhere under $10, but who cares about the price when you've got heaven in a to-go box? Fish burritos are about $5.50, and I usually have these during Lent. Now, I've had fish burritos at other places, and they just don't compare to Alerto's. They've got that tender, crispy fish on the inside, good amount of pico de gallo, sour cream, cheese, ahh... it's so good, it's almost sinful to have on Fish Fridays. They have plenty of salsas on the inside if you dine in, but they charge extra for sauce at the drive-thru!

So damn good. My favorite Mexican spot ever. I don't know what it is they do, but everything tastes so amazing. The cheese enchiladas are perfect, the carne asada fries are huge and can feed multiple people, potato tacos are bomb, regular hard shell tacos are bomb, their horchata is dreamy. I don't know what it is, but Allerto's, you have my heart.

Update review. This place now has 5 stars in my books. Despite the slower than I expect service, the food here still delivers on point. I got something that was not on the menu because my friend advised me of its delicious nature. She was right!! The adobado fries are fantastic. The aroma alone is mouthwatering. One bite and I am hooked instantly. They pack the fries with everything; tomatoes, potatoes, guacamole, sourcream, etc. I shall definitely be back for more. On a side note I was informed by another friend that the burrito here is much larger than the other location a couple of streets down. Yup correcto!! Now I am stuffed yet as I am writing this review I continue to dream about the fries. Pure bliss I tells ya!! *insert Homer Simpson drool face*

Alertos, You and I have been through a lot together. I first discovered you back in High School, where I would visit you at least 2-3 times a week after school, ordering so many things: Carne Asada/Fish/Breakfast burritos and tacos, Super Nachos/Fries, horchata, and even just a side of tortilla sometimes! Then I got mad at you because you increased your prices, and I thought I could find someone else who could give me the same love for cheaper. So I went on my journey all throughout college to discover that you are my one true love for Super Fries. No one can do them like you can, Alertos, I am so sorry for deserting you all these years. Dat sour cream, guac, pico de gallo, cheese, carne asada, cilantro (no beans, sorry)... I even turned to you one Valentine's Day beacuse YOU WERE THERE FOR ME. You even offer a debit/credit card option now!!!! I love you and I will never turn away from you again. Love, A crazy foodie.

Great food, horrible service--grumpy, grumpy, grumpy--and the "posted hours" are shaved off by AT LEAST half an hour Sundays - Thurs! Many, many, late nighters, foodies, and bar-closers frequent here because of the food and prices...just not the service. Burritos = Bomb Tacos = Bomb Portions = Bomb Prices = Better than average bomb.

My family and I have been eating at Alertos for years because it's so freaking good. We always get carne asada quesadillas, carne asada nachos, and carne asada burritos (yes, we like our carne asada). They're all big portions and will fill you up without a doubt. The quality of the food is great as well. While I do prefer their carne asada nachos over their carne asada fries, the fries are amazing as well. The fries are crispy, and it's topped with sour cream, pico, cheese, and guacamole - can't go wrong with that. If you eat inside, they also have different types of salsas and sauces that are amazing as well. Service is quick and all the workers are really nice. Honestly, you have to come here to see how good it really is. Definitely my favorite Mexican joint in the area.

After living without Mexican food in Michigan on a daily basis, I knew my visit back home would have to include a California burrito. Priority, really. My Costa Mesa friend recommended Alerto's and it was magic. Huge huge huge burrito, the flour tortilla super fresh and hot. Carne asada was super tasty, and the french fries inside were all that I wanted them to be. The cheese was kind of clumped somewhere in the middle, but no matter. Their salsa bar had quite a few options and I loved the ones I tried. We also got the cheese chips to go. Very good decision. Freshly fried tortilla chips topped with enormous amounts of cheese. It wasn't super greasy either, it wasn't melted on top. Great road trip snack. Parking is in the back. There is a drive-thru. Prices were fair, about $5.50 ish for each burrito. $2.50ish for the cheese chips. Needless to say my craving is satisfied. 6 more months until I can taste the glory of California burritos once again.

This is probably my favorite 'fast-food' Mexican food. Haven't had a bad meal here yet. Service is always courteous. Love their burritos, fish and carne asada. They're pretty good sized with ample of solid fillings. It's a right amount of 'meat' and vegies. Some places cheat you on the meat and give you tons of greens. Have not been disappointed with their burritos yet. Tasty! Savory! Delicious. Love their cheesy greasy quesadillas. I know it's not that hard to make, but their quesadillas make me smiles Love their crunchy taquitos! Even with the melted cheese on top, it still crunch on every bite. Oh, the Super Fries. It's a must get. Tons of fries and meat in a single meal. You just can't stop eating. Eat in so you can have some of their fresh salsa & pico de gallos. You can ask at the drive through, but they don't give you enough. I love fresh salsa. Don't forget to ask for the fried chilies. They're a perfect accompaniment to all of the food mentioned above. Be careful some batch may be super spicy. Bite in slowly.

Such a good breakfast burrito. Stayed in in the area and was commuting down to Legoland, this was the perfect breakfast on the go. Not much else to say, as I visited through the drive through. The order was accurate and the food we ordered was as good as we had hoped. I would visit again if in the area.

what to order: super fries with extra crispy fries, carnitas burrito, Horchata tip: they are open late AND take card! I am proud to say that I am a regular at Alertos! I'm a server and thankful that hey are open late when I get off work and am craving some dank Mexican food. My boyfriend and I always share the same thing, super fries with extra crispy fries and a carnitas burrito. We order the fries extra crispy so they aren't soggy by the time we make it home. I don't know what it is about Mexican food, but their Horchata taste sooooo good with the food. Its not as sweet or diluted as other restaurant, definitely order that and your mouth will orgasm from the compliments in flavors and tastes. I LOVE ALERTOS. I've never tried the one down the street but you don't need to. Go here, this place is awesomes.

  • James S.

This place used to be good and it went down hill fast. The first knock against them is that they are super tight with the amount of salsa and hot sauce they'll give you. The salsa comes in tiny cups to begin with and they always act irritated if you ask for extra salsa. The second knock is that they are now charging like $5.75 for a bean, rice, and cheese burrito. BEANS. RICE. CHEESE. You've got to be kidding me. Complete rip off and they're rude. No thanks. There are tons of other options. Hit Fiesta Grill or Great Mex for way better food and service.

  • Garrett G.

Getting extra hot sauce from the young man at the drive through is like the sewage pipe escape from Shawshank Redemption. Equally unpleasant equally shitty F that guy I'm driving a couple blocks down the street from now on. I hope he gets fired, no one else rolls their eyes at you for asking for extra hot sauce. Best Mexican food for the price in Fountain Valley/South HB - plus, they have a drive-though and they're open late. Get the Alerto's breakfast burrito, their fresh homemade chips and extra salsa. Their loaded carne asada fries are amazing as well.

This review is for the half order of Nachos I ordered. They were just ok nothing special in my opinion. I paid almost $10.00 for the nachos and a regular size drink. The nachos didn't really agree with me if you what i mean but I think they are a little pricey for what you get.. I doubt I will be back. Make sure you go early they get real busy around lunch time and they have limited seating.

  • Kerry O.

Been coming here for years because of the proximity. Seems like the food quality has come down a lot even for fast food. The service has never been very competent-forgetting part of the order, leaving things out after you paid for it and sending you off into the night. Had another order shorted tonight after not having been there in a year.

Solid Mexican food for a great price. Plus they're open late which is a super plus! I recommend a half order of Carne asada fries or half order of adobada fries. The California burrito is solid too; it's a burrito with fries in it. If you like hot sauce like I do, be sure to ask for extra. If you're feeling like fish, the fish tacos are solid too

Just to put it out there from the get go - 3 stars in my review is not bad at all. I went there to check out what the rave is about here because they got pretty good yelp rating. It's a nice little Mexican food place - small and cozy. I went one weekend evening and when I got there, there was barely anyone there but quickly got so full that there was no more place to sit and people were standing in line to get their food! I was kind of blown away how popular this place was b/c that's not a typical sight. The food comes out all to-go style whether you eat in or not. They were so quick! I was surprised. Maybe even quicker than Del Taco or other fast food places. I got carne asada nachos to share b/c the lady there told me it was one of their most popular menu. A thought of it was kind of heavy but I was surprised how much it didn't strain my stomach. My husband and ate the whole small order before our burritos! I tried carnitas burrito for the first time and I realized that I'm not a carnitas person. It wasn't bad but just not what I was craving for. Anyways, I will definitely give them another try in the future. There are some stuff on the website about cash only but yes, they do now take cards :)

Anyone going to hs in the westminster vicinity will remember Alertos fondly as the best place for carne asada, well, everything! Fries, nachos burritos.. love it all. Even though I haven't been since hs (and only to the other location) coming back was a trip down a yummy memory lane. The price is right my friends.. can't beat $5 for a huge burrito loaded with meat and guac. I will say however, that it wasn't as flavorful or as big as I remembered so maybe it was this location or maybe my memory is deceiving me.. even so, it's still a great deal for a great meal!

My wife went in tonight got herself some food. we only live like .3 miles from the store, got home had to put food in the microwave. it has absolutely no taste the enchiladas have zero taste. I've tasted better enchiladas at Taco Bell the beans are about as bland is a bean can get. I've tasted better beans out of a can disgusting food I don't how people eat here next time she mention she's going to alertos I'm going to tell her fuck no. For some reason these people stay in business serving low quality even lower than El Torito even lower than Taco Bell and that's saying a lot because Taco Bell sucks.

I can't get enough of the carne asada super fries here. I order it without pico and without sour cream. They load it up with meat and I can eat half at night and heat up the other half the next day and it is still delicious. It is more worth it to order the full order and do this than to order the half. The super fries are also great with chicken! I ask for the green salsa which adds a lot of light and fresh flavor. These are my late-night guilty pleasure. I also love ordering the carne asada quesadilla. It is overflowing with meat, unlike at other places where you order a quesadilla and get mostly cheese. I can't wait to go back! They have a drive-thru and are open 24 hours.

Went there at 9am on the way back to LA from the OC. It may be just the time of day since the meat is probably just cooked, but it was the best carne asada burrito I've had out of all Alertos, Albertos, Alberts chains. The meat was plentiful and the juice pocket was squirting out before even getting anywhere near there. Yes I know how that sounds.

I've been coming here since I was a freshman many moons ago.I almost always get the carna asada burrito. If your getting the carna asada fries get the half portion. Its as big as the full, and will fill you to the brim. The restaurant itself is not very nice but its pretty clean. Pretty basic. The only thing I keep thinking about is the fact that the burritos used to taste so much better. Like the meat was better quality before. Not to mention the price has about doubled since I started eating here. How does the price go up but quality go down??! I don't know, I always feel the same after I have my burrito. I'm full but wish it would be as good as back in the day

I will start off with that I grew up eating Alberto's for the past 15 years. Drunk munchies all day! But I came to this branch for the first time since moving to FV after a night at work, and service was... Well non-existent. Took the girl almost 3 minutes to ask for my order at an empty drive thru. After I pulled up she stood in the window organizing straws for 3 minutes as I sat with money in hand. After another two minutes of organizing lids she stares at her phone. At this point I assume she doesn't want my money so I dissappointedly drive over to del taco. Most likely will not be visiting this location again.

I started going here because it was near my boyfriends work, and it quickly became a bad habit. All I have to say is they have some of the best chile relleno burritos and that is seriously what I get every time, and I have yet to be disappointed. It's loaded with a huuugge chile relleno, the perfect ratio of cheese, rice, and beans, wrapped up in a nice, toasted tortilla.... The bf enjoys the California burrito which comes with carne asada, french fries and cheese. I think he usually adds sour cream and beans too because hes a fatty, but a fatty with good taste, hehe, cause that thing is pretty darn good too (not quite as good as my chile relleno though.) Man---I promise--if you like chile relleno, try the damn burrito! Also, I think that the horchata is "home-made" or if it's not, it's not the rico horchata ole!, so that's a bonus point in my book. I don't know if I ever looked hard enough, but there are NOT many good mexican food places in that OC area, so I am sooo thankful to have found Alertos. Thanks yelpers! Thanks Alertos for being the awesomest!

Drive thru Mexican fast food...this place reminds me of Filibertos in Arizona 15 years ago...an old favorite of mine. Carne asada burrito was my choice and it is nice warm tortilla stuffed with decent portion of meat, guacamole, and pico de gallo. No rice...no beans...no cilantro...its your nonsense burrito. Yet it is Simple and so good. Used at least 5 of their small plastic containers of hot sauce (that's really not THAT hot) and I was good to go. Perfect quick, cheap drive thru spot. I'm not in Fountain Valley often but if I'm around I will drive thru again.

Best Carne Asada Tacos I've ever had. They are huge. And very fresh, too. Service is great. Only time I've had to wait longer than 5 minutes, they had a line inside and a line of cars outside. And only 2 employees. Cashier and chef.

Came for a breakfast burrito and it was gross. Eggs were burnt and the salsa tasted old. I've had better burritos at Taco Bell for a lot cheaper. A bottle of orange juice cost $2:40 don't think I'll be coming back.

I have a love hate relationship with Alertos. Their food and prices are awesome, should be 4 stars. Love the nachos, super fries and horchata. But I have an obnoxious avocado allergy and it doesn't matter if I tell them in English or in Spanish but they always serve my dishes with avocado!!! So sorry, but you lose a star. It would kill me to eat the dish with avocado. I either have to send it back, return to the restaurant and exchange it or trade lunches with someone at work. Not. Cool.

Would've given it 5 star if they didnt mess up my order of some turkey burrito when it was supposed to be Carne Asada! I was in the drive through and drove off long before I took my food out to see that it was wrong..

I love the breakfast burritos here! They are good for any time of the day! For the price, it is not a bad breakfast burrito and it tastes delicious! I had the 3 roll tacos before or taquitos and those are quite awesome!

This place is usually great. However, occasionally when I ask for extra cheese or chicken... my request falls on deaf ears (drive thru only) but I am charged the added fee. SMH!

I always come to this alertos, usually a couple times per week since I work late and not much is open by the time I get off, and I have never been disappointed til now. I don't write negative posts on here because usually it's not a big deal. But tonight what I ordered and what I got were not even close. I ordered my regular California burrito (with no pico de gallo) and what I got was pollo asado (no) with guacamole (no). That's it. No cheese, no fries, wrong meat, not even close. I'm so disappointed right now. I don't know who was working tonight, but clearly some more training is needed. And now I'm hungry so I guess I'm going to del taco.

This restaurant is my new favorite Mexican food place. Ever since my last one closed down several months ago, I have been looking for a new one, and this one hit the spot. I would recommend it to anyone who likes authentic Mexican food.

Carne asada fries are good! Lots of beef. I got the half size, but even that was HUGE! My friend got the breakfast burrito, but said it was mostly filled with potatoes--not enough ham and eggs. :T They accept credit card now with a minimum of $5.

I've been going here for years and although everyone talks about the carne asada fries, fish burrito, breakfast burritos, etc., the best thing on this menu, in my opinion, is the huevos rancheros. I've had a lot of huevos rancheros but Alertos' is by far the best!

TERRIBLE customer service. I went today (09/01/14) around 1:30PM for my bf's 30 min lunch. The cashier on duty was super RUDE, made ZERO eye contact, no response when i'd say thank you, etc. I politely asked for two bean and rice burritos with NO cheese...and of course low and behold I receive two burritos with extra cheese ...As I attempt to explain to the cashier that I am lactose intolerant, he turns his BACK on me, then as soon as I stop talking he proceeds about his business. I'm obviously upset because one, i'm short on time, and two he was not listening to me. Just thought I'd share. I will definitely not be returning to this place.

Great! Really really good. Tried: Carnitas Super Burrito Place was pretty clean. All three in my party had leftovers. I didn't use restroom to comment. Radio had bad background noise; asked them to change it and they did. I'm surely coming back for the same burrito!

Drive thru rocks! I am MexAmerican and a damn good cook too (if I say so myself). This is as close to Mex in California as it gets. This is our go-to place when I don't feel like cooking. Reasonable and HUGE portions.

Why anyone would give this place anything but an 'A' rating is beyond me. You would think there would be a plethora of Mexican restaurants in Orange County that would deliver more than an 'El Torito type' experience. But no, there is not if you have a true love of solid authentic Mexican fare. I wish Alertos would open a stand alone restaurant with table service and a bar while keeping the standards of their food. And on the naysayers, why are you ordering french fries smothered in whatever in a Mexican restaurant? This place is for true believers. Tortillas, not french fries for goodness sakes!! Can we please have only a handful of wonderful Mexican restaurants that have not been Americanized?

After yesterday's lunch fiasco, I opted to forgo the free lunch at corporate and went across the street to Alertos Mexican Food. I'm so glad I did! Not a big parking lot, but I walked from across the street so parking wasn't an issue for me. Carne Asada Burrito. Great price. Decent portion size. Pretty good taste as well.

Dang...I had high hopes for this place. Review is solely for the carne asada fries... I've been craving for carne asada fries for some time now. The last time I had a chance to eat it after going to the club, I wasn't in the best condition to eat it...or anything at all for that matter... So I came here for lunch and got the half order. +1 it was a large portion but still around $6.50. I can't imagine what a full size order is. It was decent, but not as cheesy as I would like. Fries were not crispy enough either, so it was basically a plate of soft potatoes, beans, salsa, cheese, sour cream and some guac all piled together. It wasn't bad, and my options may be limited in this area, however, I've had much much better carne asada fries elsewhere.

Alertos is definitely an institution to us Fountain Vallians. You have to try the carne asada fries. Their carne asada burritos and breakfast burritos are also legit.

While their food is still ok most of the time, I highly recommend travelling a few blocks to the other Alerto's. I frequently go to this one in a pinch because it's not far from my place, but they are generally slower and have messed up my order on numerous occasions. (i.e. you ask for extra guacamole, they charge you for it, and it is nowhere to be found). This is especially frustrating if you get it to go. I still love the food, but the other Alerto's a few blocks up Brookhurst is well worth the extra 3 minutes of driving IMO.

Alerto's is another incarnation of the series of "-to's" Mexican-styled restaurants. (Alejandro's, Alberttaco's, Adelanto's, Alberto's, etc.) And, if you've been to one, you've pretty much been to all. It's a small, free-standing taco/burrito restaurant that dishes out some pretty mean Mexican food. The thing here at Alerto's, and pretty much all over Southern California, is that the food is consistently great tasting and, as is the case everywhere, they only accept cash. The problem could be solved because they all have ATMs on the premises. The problem could also be solved if they just start accepting credit cards. This location has a drive thru window, which is cool, as well as an enclosed dining area. The place could definitely use a television set by virtue of having an enclosed restaurant to help differentiate it from others (I stress this because many of these taco/burrito joints don't have indoor seating!). You can tell that this location probably used to be a former Taco Bell or KFC just by looking at the exterior. The place is pretty tiny, and you should probably expect to have your food set for take out. (I can't help but keep thinking of one of the originators of the Mexican free-standing revolution in Southern California, Alberttaco's in Cypress, and how they have a whole dual drive-thru window operation down pat). This Alerto's is conveniently located near my office, so I swing by here once in a while for either a breakfast burrito or a carne asada burrito if I need to consume massive amounts of protein. Both items are great, but probably so bad for you in so many ways. I can only imagine that all that sour cream and lard could not help if you're trying to keep the figure in check. I don't usually fool myself into thinking that by walking here would serve to offset the big burrito I'm about to consume, but I do anyhow. Check it out, but only in moderation.

I've never really gotten anything except for the carne asada fries, but this place always satisfies! They give you a hefty amount, enough to share with 2-3 people for a late night snack! They are open till 2!

  • Bryan H.

We love the food. Not only do you get quantity but quality. My wife loves the Vegatarian Burrito and I order the Carne Asada Burrito. We have never been disappointed with the quality of the food. I would highly recommend going inside to order and take advantage of their full salsa bar. Their salsa bar includes mild to hot salsa and a variety of chili peppers.

I would have given it 4 stars if the hot sauce had flavor. It tasted like water - no spice whatsoever.

Everytime I come here, it's all about the carne asada fries FULL SIZE! No I'm definitely not skimping on calories or fat when I come here! It's seriously a heapful of tasty goodness! Carne asada burrito... Ahhh yeeaaa boii! Carne asada is quite juicy! I recently discovered POLLO FRIES! Bomb.com ! The chicken was extremely tender and tasty! That first bite won't allow you to think straight! My heart was content that day...well maybe not my heart in the long run, but definitely my estomago! Full size fries are about 8.50z, never realized how pricey it was but you are getting meat, fries, beans, guacamole, cheese, onions, tomatoes, cilantro! I wish they made it with the thin fries! Enjoy! :)

  • Joy K.

The fries are not as good as people say they are! Our fries were extremely soggy, and the guac/beans to fries ratio is 5:1. We even had a raw potato in ours! Who does that?!?!? No bueno. I miss Albatross. :(

  • Justin V.

Very rarely do I give a place one star but I'm upset about how bad this burrito was. Drove through at about 2am, ordered a carne asada burrito. I was drunk (gf was driving) and so fucking hungry because I hadn't eaten since 8 and we were drinking the whole night. Got home to eat my burrito - half of it is almost raw onions and the other half, carne asada that tasted like it came from a can. On top of that, the hot sauce or salsa was a complete joke. Watered down, no flavor. I'm still hungry as hell and the burrito is in the trash can. Time to eat some ramen with a garlic fried egg .

I always come here late at night when I'm starving! It's in a small lot near Del Taco and KFC. The drive thru is useless unless you're the only one in the drive thru or are super lazy to park and get out. It takes a while. They take cash only which is a downside but they have an atm inside. Fair prices for the portions that they give you. I usually always get the super fries or tacos. Just remember that this isn't taco bell and super cheap. It cost a little more. I really like the horchata here as well even though it's a little bit on the sweet side.

We've all been there before - those nights where you drink so much, but you need to eat something to sober up so you can sneak back in to your house without waking up the parentals...wait. Maybe that's just me? WELL, nonetheless, that is where Alertos steps in. Located on Brookhurst right next to the KFC before Sam's Club on Warner, this place is pretty easy to find. The dining room is small, but to be honest, I never go during the day to be able to sit in there. Seriously, Alertos is the best thing for those nights of debauchery with its drive-thru being open 24 hours (well on Fridays & Saturdays; til 2 the rest of the week). I've been going here for yearssss. It has the same typical menu that you'd see at other dive-y Mexican restaurants. Can't go wrong with the carne asada fries aka "super fries." For about $8 you get a huge full order of deliciousness. It's bomb when you're both drunk AND sober. Just sayin'. If you're not in the mood for fries, go with the pollo asado burrito with guac and picco de gallo. It's huge and worth the price for about $5. So yea, if you guys are in the area and need something cheap and fast, stop by here and try it. FYI it's cash only so make sure you stop by an atm before or something!

Got the carne asada fries and pineapple drink, yum! Loved the cucumber sauce. Drive through or dine in. Clean and bright atmosphere inside makes you feel safe to eat here. Cheap gray food. Good temp in dining area. Some hole in the wall places I've been to, sometimes part of the cheap price is not having ac or doors are open and not unusual for an occasional curious fly to wander in. Not here. Menu pretty easy to understand, pictures too. Good ventilation if no ac. But enough of this, go in and try for yourself!

Not sure if I was spoiled by 24-hour Mexican food joints in San Diego or I had a skewed opinion when drunk binging on fatty carne asada fries at 3am in college, but I found the food at Alertos bland and inauthentic. I ordered a california burrito and pollo asada fries and both were mediocre at the most; the meat was flavorless, the red salsa was not even a tad bit spicy, and the fries were super soggy and were those generic thick-cut frozen fries that you can buy at the grocery store! SO disappointed at those fries tsk tsk... As far as late night Mexican food goes, Alertos really didn't make the cut for me.

  • Emily L.

Half order of carne asada fries is more than enough! Super fillingg yum. I've also tried the chicken burrito it's better if you add the Pico de gallo. Don't order the wet burrito togo because it will be a hassle to eat at home or in the car.

My go-to place for hard shell beef taco! There aren't many places that sell this in OC so I'm very excited to have found a great one at Alerto's.

This spot has always been a go-to for late night snacks. I've always been satisfied with their burritos (carne asada, breakfast, California, etc.), rolled tacos, carne asada fries/nachos but nothing has changed in the past decade+. I mean... it's cheap, convenient, and filling. Implement modern payment methods besides "cash only." And maybe update that drive-thru sign. *September 2013

This place brings back high school/college memories...y'know... the late night on the way home from clubbing but so hungry from all that alcohol binging nights. yes, food still the same, a little pricier, but just as greasy and tasty.

Carne asada fries is a go for. I would highly reccomend you get extra hot sauce. The hot sauce they give you is kind of watered down. I remember back in the days when I went with my older brother the carne asada burrido was like at 2.95 now its too expensive lol. Food here at least on par of freshness. It is not the best but its worth going.

    (3)
  • Gustavo B.

This place has fantastic authentic Mexican food! It is open very late for that late night burrito and has very fair pricing! You can get yourself a delicious carne asada burrito for about 5 dollars. Very good sized burrito and fast service. Definitely recommended for some delicious Mexican food.

It was my son's 9th birthday. We asked him what he wanted for dinner. He said, "Mexican food, but not Taco Bell." My husband took us to Alerto's. All of us got burritos. I had veggie. My kids all got beef or chicken and my husband got carnitas. HOLY GUACAMOLE...the burritos were freakin' fat! They were really good, too. We all left stuffed.

Alertos is bomb and I love how it stays open so late! I love the taquitos, chicken fajita burrito, beef taco, chicken taco, enchilada, and I wanna try the fries with carne asada

I recently went to satisfy a craving my gf had, I'm loyal to my taqueria, but I'll have to admit I was totally hooked on Alertos. I ordered two tacos and shared some of the carne asada fried my gf got. The tacos were ok, big portions. But what took the cake is the carne asada fries. The meat is cooked right. A good balance on ingredients, the guacamole is delicious. She got the half size and it was more than enough. I will definitely go again.

I come here for the carne asada stuff :) Especially the California Burrito! SO BOMB.

    (4)
  • Oliver N.

Great for when you're drunk as hell and need a nice, greasy burrito. I always get a California burrito with rice and sour cream. They put fat crispy fries in it and it's so amazing. The meaty cheese pulls in all the flavors of the crane asada, beans and rice. I can't give them 5 stars because I ate a fish burrito once and it gave me food poisoning. I shouldn't stray away from the usual.

  • Mai N.

My friend and I were on a food mission and decided to be fat asses and go to alertos. This place may look completely run down, but the food is deliciously awesome. We got a half order of carne asada fries and a cali burrito. Carne asada fries: for a half order, there was soooo much food. Yummy fries topped with tons of tender meat, tomatoes, onions, melted cheese and of course their hot sauce. There was so much fries we didn't even make it to the burrito. For about 11 bucks, it was a great dinner.

    (5)
  • Janice L.

half order of carne asada fries just about the same size as a full order for a couple bucks cheaper? I'm sold! The carne asada here is pretty delicious too and their hot sauce never disappoints. I wish I had some right now, but unfortunately the Mexican eateries around Las Vegas aren't up to par.

So I've definitely had more authentic mexican food but this place can't be beat for the value. Huge portions for the price! And it's close to my house/work so that's a plus. Things I like: - chicken soft taco - taquitos - chicken fajita burrito - carnitas taco Things I don't like: - machaca (not enough meat) - flautas (not crunchy enough and not enough meat) - tres leches cake (meh) I usually go back for my favorites and try new stuff here and there.

Oh man! When you're craving some chorizo con huevos at 3am after drinking and partying, this is the place to go!! It's so hard to get great Mexican food in Hawaii, and this place was amazing! It's just a super small place, looks like they took over a tiny Jack in the Box or something. But man the sauces, the flavor, even the pollo asado was AMAZING!!! A lot of restaurants can't seem to find the right proportion of chorizo to huevos! This place does! Sooooo good! And their horchata was amazing as well!! Nothing like great mexican late night drunken food!! Prices are very reasonable, portions are huge, and I would DEFINITELY go back!

I usually only get my breakfast burritos at George's Hamburgers in Fullerton, but Alerto's, you've converted me into buying burritos closer to home with just as much banging flavor! Thank you for saving me a 30 minute drive all the way to Fullerton. Oh, and your pineapple juice is a great drink that goes along with everything when the boyfriend isn't in the mood for horchata. See you soon!

  • Jeff T.

I really enjoy this place on occasion. Although I generally come here because it's open all night, I actually really enjoy the food. The breakfast burritos, shredded beef tacos, and fish tacos are all very good. The night shift guy is friendly and provides good service.

  • Kayla L.

CASH ONLY! But there is a machine on the inside for the mighty hungry in case you need it. RED SAUCE! RED SAUCE! RED SAUCE! Give me more. You can never have enough of this on your food because it's so delicious! I am a creature of habit sometimes when I'm going out to eat and it's always the beef tacos plate with rice and beans. The shells are crunchy, the meat is easy to bite into, all of this is what a taco should taste like. I have also tried the flautas and they're also a good choice to get if you come here. They're like the tacos rolled into a crispy shell except they have guacamole, sour cream, and melted cheese on the top. Now, I have noticed a different in the sauces between the FV location and the one in Lake Forest. I don't know why that is and I can't put my finger on it! Now, I would have given this place four stars BUT I had someone order to-go and they ended up missing an order and the drive back was not worth it. I don't know if they can do anything for us at this point but we'll just have to be more careful when taking to-go orders so this doesn't happen again! Will continue to visit their other location due to convenience and it being all the same food! 8/10

i love this place. Its my go to dirty mexican spot when i visit back home. The carne asada burrto and super nachos are my go to items. They dont go cheap on the meat portions. The carne asada burrito is seriously just tortilla, 10 lbs meat (kidding) and guac. Atmosphere is somewhere i wouldnt be embarassed to bring my girlfriend.

This place is an institution. Whenever we go down to visit the wife's family....a trip to Alertos is in the cards. There is no better place to get diarrhea in all of Southern California! Note to self - Don't eat Alertos the night before making a 20 hour drive up the 5

First time coming here, and I got the carne asada fries after reading the positive reviews on Yelp. The fries were pretty good, and it fed me and my brother. But, I was disappointed because the fries were NOT crunchy from the get-go. The service was friendly and the restaurant was pretty clean. I also ordered a carne asada burrito, and that was also pretty good. Overall, the food was OK, nothing spectacular.

I have lived in FV over 13 years and finally tried Alertos last month. OMG!! This place is amazing. Food is great. My go to is always the machaca burrito and carnae asada fries (Super Fries). The Super Fries is a meal in itself. I have introduced my wife and brother to it, and they fell in love with it instantly. Whenever you see lots of single guys frequenting the place, you know it's "Game On". It is also good to know that they are open 7 a.m., too, if you cannot wait until lunch time; and they take credit cards (with min purchase).

A solid late-night Mexican food option for the SoCal college kids. Service is fast, it's cash-only, and they have some bomb carne asada fries. The environment isn't really that sketchy, although the mini parking lot is poorly lit, but come on - it's Fountain Valley, crime probably won't strike. Unless I had a large group of guys with me (in which case, it's off to Albatross!), I would probably come here for a late-night California burrito craving.

    (4)
  • Kels B.

This place is great. They are open late so hits the spot for those late night munchies when the bars get out. I order a carne asana burrito with beans, cheese, and guacamole only. The burrito is huge and I normally cut it in half and eat it for two meals. They always get my order right and I don't even have to get out of my car. And did I mention is cheap.

If you stuffed an army boot with thinly shredded cheddar cheese, fried it golden brown and smothered it in hot sauce I would eat it. Luckily, Alerto's Mexican Food has tortillas and some simple yet irresistable Mexican ingredients that effectively squelch my so-cal induced Mexican food cravings. If you and your girlfiends are dilly-dallying around on "girl's night out" and decide you want a little snacky, go across the street to Del Taco. You may spill a glob of creamy guacamole from the piled-high SuperNachos on your dress, or perhaps a half gallon of grease from one of the meat-stuffed Carne Asada burritos on your handbag. Yes indeed, Alertos serves hearty portions of no frills, no nonsense Mexican fast food that will tame even the most wild cheese craving, guacamole lusting, chip jonesing appetites. The staples here are steak (carne asada), flag salsa (pico de gallo), cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and refried beans. You can be certain that you will find at least two of these ingredients in any one menu item. Like I metioned, there are no frills here. Just large portions of simple, tasty, greasy ingredients packed into an ever-familiar styrofoam takeout box or yellow butcher's paper. Smother your food with the little cup of heave...I mean hot sauce, get your napkins ready, and dig in! Great for late-night!

If you're looking for good Mexican fast food, then you might want to try Alertos. Alertos serves up simple but good quality Mexican food at a reasonable price. Their offerings include your typical array of Mexican affair like burritos, tacos, beans, and rice. My food of choice is normally their chicken burrito. After they cook their chicken, the chicken is left bathing in a tomato based sauce. This keeps the chicken moist and quite flavorful. The chicken is then wrapped in a warm flour tortilla. There's a salsa bar so you can customize your flavor combinations. To wash everything down their horchata usually does the trick.

Half order of carne asada fries is about 1 full to go box, it can be like a full meal. their carne asada burrito and horcatha is to die for.

Holy cow! First time here. Was initially craving a carne asada burrito and found them on yelp. A couple miles from work. When I got there I changed to a carnita's burrito and then threw in a fish taco. $4.89 for the burrito and $2.90 for the taco. Could have done without the taco!! As it is am going to have to save it for later cause I'm stuffed. Was bummed initially because I forgot to order cheese on the burrito. Turns out it didn't need it. Was loaded with fresh Guacamole (not the runny salsa kind, nice big chunks of avocado!), pico de gallo and onions. The carnitas were ever so slightly salty with some crispies, just the way I like them. Service was pretty fast (5-7 minutes). Will defintely be back!! P.S. - Another review says, Cash Only. Not true, at least at the Fountain Valley location. They take debit and credit cards (paid for mine with a debit card).

Oh how I love thee... ya know just before their burritos got all small and their prices shot up a bit. :/ Le sigh. Yeah..before a couple months ago, their burritos were like 3.5 diameters..now they're just so skinny and somewhat pricey. It's now around $4.xx for a carne asada (numero uno!) compared to its older $3.xx price. :/ It's still good, just you feel jipped kinda. Yeah, before the older burrito would seriously count for lunch+half of dinner or something, but not so much now. They're still good - just pricey and more skinny now. Their half order of steak nachos are ~7 dollars (memory's kind of fuzzy) but those are good. Lots of steak, guacamole, sour cream, some cheese, tomatoes, beans, and whatnot over crispy tortilla chips that are also somewhat soggy because of the guacamole. Really good but really bad (for your arteries and whatnot..) The place is scary at night. My friend who lives near Alerto's heard a gunshot there ._.;; It's not the safest place to be at especially in the wee hours of the morning. The drive through is a mess. It's always soo crowded especially during the weekends when highschoolers/college kids take their Alerto's Runs for a quick break...its actually reminiscent of In-N-Out's drive throughs, just minus a little fraction of it though. It's easier to just go in the store and order something, but who wants to get out the car and do that.. :/ Some good stuff: Carne Asada Burrito ~$4 Breakfast Burrito (potatoes, eggs, cheese, ham, something else maybe..) ~$2-$3 Steak Nachos ~$7 half order (or was it full..?) Horchatas ~1.xx Oh yes, you now have to pay for extra hot sauce/pickled veggies. UNLESS (maybe) you're some cute girl - they won't charge for the extra.

When I'm having any kind of ethnic food, I want authenticity. I would really prefer having the mystery meat spinning on a hanging stick, coming from street carts, dolloped with fresh guac, onions and cilantro like they serve them in TJ. If not TJ, then like many of the mom and pop shops in LA. Yes, that authentic, ya dig? =] Alerto's comes real close to packin' in the flavor and is open late. Carne asada anything there is awesome. Ironically, I've never had the C.A. fries, which I hear is one of the biggest attractions there. I like the Carne burritos and the California burrito (which has french fries in it). Don't sleep on the breakfast burritos either! Nice price and way better than any other breakfast burrito out there! Arriba Alertos! ;)

About 10 years ago one of my good friends was at UC Irvine and she took me to Alerto's at 1am to mitigate the worst hangover in the history of man, and I've been hooked here ever since. I will definitely drive from West LA to Alerto's because their chicken tacos and tostadas are that good. I like the breakfast burrito and chorizo burritos as well (although the chorizo is really greasy - mix it in with the breakfast burrito). Everyone raves about the carne asada burrito, but I don't think it's that great - their chicken is way, way better. Price is awesome, location off the freeway is convenient and usually it's easy to find parking and a seat. I love Alerto's and if they ever close I'm going to be crying like a bi%*h. Thank you Alerto's - you're the hole in the wall that keeps me happy!

Not sure if this is the 1st one or the 2nd one. I think this is the 2nd one, the larger one next to Pho 54. Anyways, I really like this place. For the time I was living in irvine I would always crave, seriously crave Mexican food, hardcore, taco-truck status Mexican Food. Alertos would always help me with my fix. Anything with Carne Asada is good good good. Carne Asada fries good, Carne Asada Burrito good. Depending on what size group you are with would be on which Alertos to go to. Romantic Date of 2 people? go to the first one, smaller one. Huge birthday celebration of 10 to 20 people? Suggest the 2nd medium size one next to the Pho 54. Have really picky Laguna Beach friends who like a super clean establishment? Go to the 3rd Alertos, that one is too clean for me to even eat my Mexican Food. My person fave. is the 2nd one. I went there for my birthday once with about 10 of my friends and one of my friends bought a full order carne asada fries, stuck candles in it. Everyone sang happy brithday to me, and then passed around bite sized samples of the fries. Good Times.

The burrito I had was okay, nothing special. The chips were stale. Service was good. I want to try the carne asada fries now that I have read the reviews on Yelp, but as of now it's just three stars for me because I have definitely had better Mexican food.

I don't exactly remember eating that night, but from what I do recall the breakfast burrito was a winner. good tortilla, good size. i did not like the carne asada fries. fries were mushy. they were big but i just was not feeling it. girlfriend got a taco which was surprisingly gigantic. you get your money's worth at this place.

Good Mexican eats for (relatively) cheap prices! I love that the tortilla here is thick and chewy, just the way I like it. The burritos are gigantic; you could probably share one and still be full. Love the California burrito ($4.90), filled with carne asada and fries! Reminds me of JV's in San Diego. The meat was flavorful and wasn't dry at all! Got the breakfast burrito ($3.95) too because of all the raving reviews, but it was just OK. I wouldn't get it again, but I'm happy I tried it. Had to get a large horchata ($2.25) because no burrito meal is complete without it. Yummm, horchata. You could really taste the rice and cinnamon in this one. The facility is pretty clean and when we went around 7pm, there was only one other couple inside. It took about 5-10 minutes to get our order out, even with the drive-thru line going. The salsa bar is plentiful (try the avocado or cucumber salsas!) but you have to ask the staff for little containers. Wish they weren't so stingy in that sense. When I asked for napkins, she looked at me like I was crazy. What's so weird about needing some napkins? I'm surprised that half order of super nachos/fries are $6 something (the full is a whopping $8!). I still remember the days when a full serving of these things were only $5 and change. Oh, the good ol' days...

Alerto's is kinda ghetto looking next to a KFC, but it is almost a law of the universe that the more ghetto a Mexican place is, the more amazing the food is. Their fish burrito is amazingly crisp and tender, making Rubios feel artificially made by comparison. The best part though is their salsa, which is fairly mild, yet complements the fish perfectly.

Had a craving for rolled tacos and our regular fast food-ish Mexican place doesn't have the kind I wanted. I wanted rolled tacos with cheese and guac dumped on top. This place definitely delivered! The only thing is I really wanted chicken and I don't think this place had it. I forgot to ask, but the menu doesn't state beef or chicken and no one asked. Ah well, still was tasty. Husband ordered the nachos and holy crap! That was a large order of nachos! They were topped with everything you'd ever need. I can't remember all that was on it, but it was stacked! I was extremely impressed with the workers there. If no one was ordering, they were cleaning. The tables, the counters, you name it. The place looks kind of old, but I'll be damned if you find a crumb on the table. PS..CASH ONLY.

Came here ever since middle school! Prices used to be cheaper but now it went up and the Jalapenos use to be included but not anymore :( It's still good! I always get the Carne Asada Burrito or Carne Asada Fries with lots of hot sauce, sides of Jalapenos and many limes. If you're eating there and decided to get the fries then tell them make the fries extra crispy :). Also get the Horchata to drink. It does cost to refill.

I've been an Al's fan since high school (late 90's) and this location was always referred to as "the good Al's". Sure, the other location on Brookhurst was always a local late night grub spot, but at the FV location, you didn't have to worry about getting shot by fast and furious dickheads. The salsa bar here is clutch, and the gut busting carne asada burritos are top notch. I always get a half order of nachos and dump their hot sauce all over it, throw in a big ass horchata and baby, you got a stew goin'. Over time they seem to have hired a more fluent english speaking staff, which is great. I can speak spanish fluently, but not having to order for my whole crew in spanish to ensure the order is correct is a welcome addition. Cons: the place is tiny, and the drive-thru is poorly designed. You can always count on a line if you bust drive-thru, and if there is a line and you want to dine-in, godspeed trying to get into and out of the back parking lot.

Ordered a breakfast burrito with no meat and sour cream. The potatoes were partially cooked / slightly crunchy in spots with no seasoning at all. I suppose they are expecting you to add salsa or something else for taste. Egg tasted well cooked, not runny, cheese was just ok. Probably would try again.

Three freaking words everyone should know about this place, "Carne Freaken Asada Fries" Wait.... That was 4 words.... Nvm that take out the freaken part and it makes sense! Always packed during late nights because its open 'til like 1 or 2 depending, I mean you cant really go wrong with Mexican food after a night of heavy getting smashed. One of my favorite breakfast burritos here, usually don't stray from the usual super fries or carne asada/breakfast burritios so can't really comment on the rest of the stuff. I'm sure others have mentioned but go for the half order of carne asada fries its a better value. Sucks they only accept cash.

Fish Burrito, Carne Asada Burrito and the Chili Relleno are delicious! Those are the main ones I pick every time there's an Alerto's craving. Fish Burrito: batter fried white fish w/ cabbage tossed in tartar sauce & pico de gallo. If you can't do raw onions just pick em out. It's wrapped in their tasty tortillas: great taste, slightly flaky & chewy texture (Mission tortillas could learn a bit from these). Great with their red chili sauce from the small containers. Carne Asada Burrito: delicious sauteed morsels of beef mixed w/ guacamole. Stuffed with so much meat you kind of wonder the veggies went. Carne Asada Nachos are good too! I think we ran out of chips before we could finish the topping. Chili Relleno (a la carte): batter fried chili (pasilla?), stuffed w/ cheese and served in red enchilada sauce. One thing though is that the seeds are still in there, don't really mind them. To get seeds out you must slice it open and when you slice something open it makes it very difficult to stuff and fry properly. Had the Mixed Burrito, once. Not good, was bland and tasteless. Tres Leches Cake: DO NOT order! It's dry and almost tasteless, the cake itself was like a sponge and not in a good way. This isn't made there it comes from some bakery. Waste of money. Burritos are stuffed full of meat, large portions and contents are evenly distributed. I can get a little of everything in each bite! Prefer em over Chipotle which are stuffed mostly with rice & beans, and each bite is beans, rice or meat only. Prices are great at Alerto's, taste is great! Don't forget your Horchata!

I'm truly amazed by Alertos. It is the kind of place where I would normally be afraid to eat meat, but I have never ever had a bad experience. The breakfast burritos are the best I've ever had. They are huge and come with eggs, bacon, ham, potatoes and cheese. So perfect. The carne asada fries are AMAZING. I crave them regularly. The carne asada is SO good... I don't know what they do to it, but it is heaven on god damn Earth. It is cheap, comforting, filling and fast. I love it.

Stopped by with my roommate today after building up a huge appetite surfing the massive swell that rolled into orange counties coast late last night. I ordered their carne asada burrito with extra cheese, guac, and sour cream. The tortilla was fresh and really well prepared, the carne wasn't dry and it was cut in nice chunks. The burrito itself wasn't really too filling and kind of on the skinny side. I had also ordered a side of chips to try out the salsa bar with and to my surprise they hooked up a full take out box of freshly made tortilla chips (for only $1!). The pros: Great tasting authentic Mexican food, super easy to find location, plenty of parking, great menu variety, clean facility, and reasonable pricing. The cons: Small Burritos : / Overall, a pretty good spot if your in the area and craving good Mexican food. Just wish the portions were a little bigger.

Big fan of carne asada fries. Been to Alberto's, arsenios, Alejandro's, Angelo's, and any of the other brothers around Orange County. I can tell you, this one makes the best carne asada fries. Their meat is never undercooked or has that rubbery taste. Their fries are different then the other ones. A very promising amount of food. My review is solely based on the carne asada French fries. I live within walking distance to arsenios, but drive here when I'm craving those fries!

So, I just got turned on to Alertos by my friends. So far, I've tried the: California Burrito - A super tasty burrito with carne asada, french fries, and grilled onions. What? French fries you say? YES. Such a brilliant concept. I know it wasn't Alerto's idea, but whoever's it was was a genius. Probably. Super Fries - An egregious amount of food in a styrofoam take-out box, this masterpiece is a whole load of tasty fries topped with generous amounts of carne asada, guacamole, onions, tomatoes, sour cream, and awesomeness. A must-try, and kudos to you if you can eat it all in one sitting. I couldn't, and I've been shamed by my friends ever since. (In my defense, I'd already eaten a late lunch.) Shrimp Burrito - Didn't expect it to be spicy with peppers, but hey, I can roll with that. Get it? Roll? Burrito? Nevermind. This is a decent burrito; not as good as the Shrimp Diablo from Baja Fresh, but still pretty good. Perhaps a 3.6 outa 5. It hit the spot, but I'm sure there are other, tastier things on the (huge) menu. Like the California Burrito. Yeah, I'll be getting that again. Mmmm... french fries.

Why there are two of these places within a block of each other is beyond me. There are misspelled words on their menu so that automatically means "really-good-mexican-sure-to-be-memorable"---or at least another added star for good measure. "Incredibly simple drawing of a man wearing a sombrero?" Yes, true here. You like oversized food? You will FIND IT HERE! FATTIES! Drippy, orange, oily liquid ahead, so get ready for slippery quesadillas of pleasure. Ordering something without cheese? Like a burrito? Prepare for it to be such a ridiculous amount of food the first thing you're sure to say when you first lay eyes on it is, "Holy shit this is huge"--- because there's really nothing else you would say.

Tried out this place whilst visiting my girlfriends parents house in Fountain valley and had a craving for a California Burrito. I've never had one outside SD before so I thought I'd give it a chance outside it's traditional homeland. Overall it was OK but the burrito was missing sour cream, which we had to ask for to be put in. The food itself was quite good although the hot sauces weren't very hot. Overall a pretty good experience but only 3 stars due to the lack of sour cream.

My absolute favorite low-priced Mexican food in the area. Whenever I'm tired from work or it's late at night and I'm craving some Mexican, this is the default. Their adobada (spiced pork) is always incredibly delicious. The pork is cubed, rubbed with spices, and cooked in some magical way. I love the adobada combination plate: you get a generous helping of adobada, some guacamole, lettuce, pico de gallo, rice, beans, and tortillas. It's enough food for two meals. The flour tortillas are to die for; they come out fresh and hot, wrapped in foil so they stay warm all the way home. You can ask for an extra order (two tortillas) for only around $1 more. They also do something special to their refried beans; I love them. Other favorites of mine are their carnitas, cheese enchiladas, bean and cheese burrito, and vegetarian burrito (a bean and cheese burrito with sauteed onions and peppers added). It's all good. The restaurant itself is nothing special; it looks like an old fast food place, and I almost always do take out. But next to the counter is a salsa bar, which is the #1 reason I never use the drive through. Instead, come on into the restaurant and ask the person behind the counter for some containers so you can take the salsas home; be sure to take home a couple, as you'll love them all. The combination of perfectly spiced and cooked meats, delicious beans and tortillas, an amazing salsa bar, and late-night hours make this a regular stop of mine.

Found out about this place through a friend awhile ago when i was living in Irvine. After my first time here...ive been coming back at every opportunity i get. Location wise, this place is kinda hidden and hard to spot out. Every time i come here i catch myself ordering the same thing...its either the carne asada fries or the carna asada nacho. Half size is about 6 something and a full size is about 8 dollars the last time i checked. The portion size is huge and def filling even for those that have the late night munches after a night of drinking and partying. Will def be back again and again and did i mention again...lol

Best Authentic - Mexican food in "The Valley" hands down! Ditch the Del Taco next door and spend a few extra bucks to find out what "real" Mexican food tastes like. They offer your typical array of Mexican food but with a more authentic and zesty taste. 24 hours a-day!!! My personal favorite the Carne Asada Fries, it will feed at least two people and make sure you get their authentic secret hot sauce. The Fish taco's are really good too, make sure to wash it down with some freshly made Horchata. The annoying parts about this place is the only form of payment they will accept is cash and they charge for refills. Overall: Well worth the extra two bucks, when comparing to Taco Bell or Del Taco!

Ever since I moved to D.C. (aka: "the land without good Mexican food"), I dream of this place when I think of Mexican food. It is a greasy hole-in-the-wall, but it is exactly what I think of when I want real Mexican food. The cover everything in cheese, the don't take cash, and they are open late. Seriously.... I am salivating just thinking of it. My favorite things are the tacos and rice. Try Alerto's - I guarantee it will change your life (and your mind about what Mexican food is).

so, why have their lines been cut down so drastically during lunch hours? UMMM... maybe because they took advantage of their customers in the first place & stupidly raised prices..... they're not doing as good business anymore! the burritos i believe, have shrunk. at a point, they charged for a little cup of salsa from their salsa bar. their quesidillas are ridiculously greasy and disgusting. i used to be a fast food junkie and cheese freak when i was a kid, but i was even reluctant to ever eat their quesidillas. their carne asada fries are FRICKEN GOOD, but i feel like i cut my life by 5 years after i eat some of it. i'd suggest to share it with friends..... I had to order and pick up some altertos chicken burritos from here for FVHS'S international week, and well, they gave my dad the order 20 MINUTES FRICKEN LATE... and the day before, they hardly gave us any of those mild/hot/taco sauces!!! wow, talk about crappy customer service. since my dad got upset though, the manager tried to compensate by giving us a crap load of napkins and large-sized cupfuls of that taco sauce. PFF. thanks a lot.... like that'll make up for my loss in sales at international week....

I come here fairly regularly for one reason - their burritos are great. I especially like the shrimp burrito. I have also tried the fish tacos and was unimpressed - there are better fish tacos elsewhere in drive-thru form. But the veggie burrito, and the California burrito are also good. I also like their soggy french fries. And as others have mentioned, if you go inside rather than the drive thru, they have a great selection of salsas including a very tasty cucumber salsa. The drive thru entrance can be hard to spot - turn onto La Alameda Ave and enter from that side of the parking lot, behind the KFC. Otherwise you'll be trying to make an awkward u-turn in the oddly-shaped parking lot.

Ok & simple Mexican food. Breakfast burritos are good and hearty. Chorizo burrito with sour cream is pretty filling. The chicken burrito is so-so...juicy, but really needs to add in stuff (guac and sour cream) to enhance it. Service is quick and efficient. Oh, Super Nachos are mighty tasty. Good eats at decent prices.

Dear Alertos, Thank you for being so close to my home and for being open 24 hrs. You really are a savior when my boyfriend and I are hungry late at night and are left with very few food options. I would rather eat one of your delicious adobado, carne asada, or carnitas burritos/tortas than greasy fast food any day (not that your food is any less fatty, but it seems healthier to me). You have a loyal fan in me! Thanks! Caroline

Picked up food and it was really good... The girl at the window was not very helpful and we had to wave her down to get her back. Once she did come back she didn't like the fact we asked for extra hot sauce, napkins and utensils. Come on now, you can't get angry at us wanting to eat our food decently... Besides that the food was good and they gave us a lot. I went back a second time hoping it was just a one time deal because I liked the food... but the same girl was working and she was still being a prick. Why do I always get these people at drive throughs? I have no clue.

This is a great place if you're looking for decent mexican fast food that isn't crappy taco bell or del taco. I always get the breakfast burrito, which comes with egg, potato, ham, bacon, and egg and it is FILLING! be careful though, it is always piping hot when you get it so don't get burned! I also enjoy their fish burritos, bean and cheese burritos, chicken fajitas burrito, carne asada fries (if you get the large one its too much for one person to eat, i would recommend sharing it), and rolled tacos (aka taquitos). Pros: Open late! when you are slightly intoxicated and want something to soak up that excess alcohol this place is pretty great. They are pretty cheap. Its only 4 bucks for a breakfast burrito! If you get a chance to dine inside, they have a mini salsa bar with some really good salsa (my personal favorite is the avocado salsa) Con: Cash only :-( sorry guys gotta make sure you have cash before you come!

Alertos gets a 3.5 rating for me. It's your typical "authentic" Mexican fast food joint along with alberto's, roberto's etc. I come here for their carne asada/pollo fries which is to die for LITERALLY. But don't get me wrong this dish is delicious though. Order the half size since you pay slightly less and you get nearly the same amount as a full order. Their california burrito is good as well which stands out from the rest because they stick fries into this. Don't forget to slap on their hot sauce which makes everything taste even better. Again not the best place to go to for authentic Mexican food but it's the best place for your greasy fries after a night of drinking.

Eat It or Beat It? **EAT IT!!** Alerto's Mexican Food has one of the most spectacular Mexican food I've had: fresh, cheap, and delicious! First off, one of my many turn-on's about this joint is the fact that their tortillas are made in-house and warmed freshly when you order your food! Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of their menu-items here, but from what I've always had, any kind of burrito is AWESOME here! If you're really hungry, I recommend getting the combo, where you can order two burritos and have a side of rice and beans, about $6-$7.. The Fountain Valley location is a bit more ghetto than the location just down the street on Brookhurst in Westminster. Nevertheless, the food is just as delicious!! ALL BURRITOS ARE APPROXIMATELY $3.00-$4.00 Breakfast Burrito: I've definitely had better at Angelo's over on Ball Road in Anaheim, but this breakfast burrito will do the job. Eggs are fresh and includes ham, cheese, bacon, and sausage. Machaca Burrito: BOY! This one was my favorite at one point and was all I got until I discovered the other burritos they had! The Machaca burrito contains shredded beef, eggs, chopped up bell peppers and onions. Very delicious and lots of flavor bursting in your mouth! Carne Asada Burrito: Definitely not frugal with the carne asada but I've had better at Los Sanchez located in Garden Grove. The carne asada burrito contains the meat, pico de gallo, and avocado. The avocado mixed in adds in a nice touch! Fajita Burrito: One of my favorite's! This order is always made fresh just like the other burritos but there's something yummy about sizzling bell peppers and onions mixed in with chicken that makes this one of my favorites! The chicken is always moist, tender, and juicy, and there's no way out of eating this burrito clean! You gotta have some napkins placed next to you or else the juices will definitely be drippin'!! It's... drippin' lickin' good!!! Fish Burrito: My all-time favorite! This burrito contains the lightly fried breaded fish with chopped lettuce, pico de gallo, mayo, and tartar sauce. I don't know what it is about Alerto's fish burrito, but it's amazing and the hot sauce that comes with it (and all burritos)... mmm, mmm, good! CONCLUSION: If you have an appetite for some cheap and amazing Mexican food/burritos, come to Alerto's! You will not be disappointed and it's almost guaranteed these burritos will make you full and give you food coma! So I say, EAT IT!!!

CASH ONLY! To behonest, this is one of the place that I found during my college days and I still go back cause its a good price for what you get. I'm a fan of the Taquitos because to be honest, whenever I go to any new mexican restaurant I always try and test their Taquitos and their rice and beans. To me, if you can't get the basics then you shouldn't be serving the food With that said, they do it quite fine with me :) Don't be afraid to check this place out. Carne Asada Fries = $$$$$, get THEM!!!

I went to college down in San Diego and became addicted to Carne Asada Burritos, double wrapped in tortilla with beans and rice inside the burrito (along with the pico de gallo and guacamole)... or as I like to say CAB DRBR... rolls off the tongue nicely. Since moving to Orange County I have been largely disappointed with this burrito scenario at other Mexican restaurants south of the 405 freeway (even though other items on the menu may be great, see other reviews). Soooo I made it my mission to find a CAB DRBR within 10 miles of my house and I found Alertos! Right away when I saw the orange glow of the little shack style restaurant I knew that my trek north had not been in vein. Baby arm size... check, around 5 lbs... check, delicious beans, rice, carne... check, tortilla that melts in your mouth... check. Belly Happy!!!!!!! I'm always looking for another delicious suggestion, the search continues.

Pretty shocked still at what passes for decent Mexican in Orange County! This is not it! I've blocked the details from my mind now, but no one in the family liked their dishes! And I noticed the other day they actually have the nerve to put a tip cup in the drive thru?? Wow!

The carne asada super fries at Alertos are full of pure love. Really don't think that there is anything else that needs to be said about that. Get the half order. That should be more than enough to satisfy at least two very hungry people. The guacamole could be more interesting and the actual meat could be better, but on the whole, the fries are legit. I still haven't found a place in NorCal that can do decent carne asada fries, so I go through mad crazy cravings for my delicious Alertos fries. I've never had the burritos or anything from there. Who needs it when there are super fries on the menu? (Side note, but I must say that after getting so used to the obscenely large burritos from NorCal, the burritos from Alertos were kind of cute.) Horchata was okay, but I've had better. Prices are reasonable and the portions are huge. All in all, I have some mad love for Alertos.

Vegan cousin Justine, thanks for ordering the veggie burrito for me. I'm hooked on this amazing creation! I'm almost positive its not on the menu. But oh, don't you worry, The veggie burrito from Alerto's does indeed exist. Its loaded with grilled bell peppers, guacamole, onions, rice and cheese (upon request). Add their salsas and hot sauce and BAM, foodgasm. Order it, you'll be hooked. & if you're not a fan of veggies, you can't go wrong with their carne asada burrito, breakfast burrito and shrimp burrito. Alerto's is so cheap, fresh and quite simply......delicious. Carne Asada fries are to die for too. GO TO ALERTO's, now.

I just came back from lunch at Alerto's and the reason I keep going back to the place is the experience that I just had. The folks behind the counter were friendly and helpful, the food was tasty and overall I think they do a great job. I especially like the carne asada burritos because not only is the meat consistently tender and flavorful, the burrito itself is really a good value when you consider how much meat there is in there instead of cheap filler. Today I also had a taste of the nachos supreme and now I understand what people have been talking about...they are really good! The salsa bar salsas are full of flavor and fully justify walking in and sitting down instead of driving through, if you ask me. Plus, I'm way happier drinking their Pina agua fresca than soda any day of the week. For consistent good quality, great flavor and fair pricing...this is the place!

Come to Alertos Mexican Food for two reasons. One is for the awesome carne asada. Doesn't matter if it's the famous burritos or super fires. Second reason to come here is for the salsa in the red ketchup bottles. It's so convenient and so tasty. This place has a great fresh salsa bar and a nice quick drive through. Don't mistake this place for Albertos. There is no comparison.

The food is decent, but lacking rich Mexican flavor. PRO: It's fast, convenient, huge portions, and fair price. CONS: very greasy and average tasting.

As you can see from my previous reviews I'm a fan of Alertos. That was until today when I dined on their breakfast burrito. Or should I say shit burrito because I literally feel like someone shit in my mouth. Your bacon tastes like fucking rancid dog meat. My stomach is sideways and I'm just counting down the hours until I make my own shit burrito. Thanks Alertos!

My fav is the adobada burrito with meat, cheese, cilantro and rice only. I don't think this is even on the menu! Eat it with their hot sauce and spray some lime on too. Thanks to my sissy who introduced this to me. Ask for a side of fried chili (free)! Squirt some lime on there and sprinkle a bit of salt on it and you've got a great complement to your main dish. Warning that the seeds are spicy.

I have been going to Alerto's regularly since I was young and boy, I had been missing out. I grew up eating cheese quesodillas and chicken tacos. Recently, I tried the carne asada french fries. Holy crap! So good! How did I spend most of my life eating here and have never tried the carne asada french fries! Cash only.

If I had a choice I'd rather go to this one than the one closer to me. Why? Because the food taste better made here and the portions for some reason are noticeably larger than the one in Westminster. I've gotten the fish (tasted good, not fishy), adobada (juicy and tasty), and carne asada(good and juicy, not dry like the other one) burrito here. All are good and portions are large. If you want something to share you can get the half order of carne asada/adobada fries, basically its whatever that's in the burrito but in a bed of fries.

You can't beat this place for quick food that satisfies you. Just make sure you have an iron stomach. I always get the Carne Asada fries and the Fish Burrito. I had the carne asada burrito once, and agree, its pretty dry. Just get the fish burrito with extra hot sauce. Get two and take it home, its that good. Its probably not the best in terms of authentic mex cuisine, but its damn good fast Mexican food - like Gourmet Taco Bell.

There's really not much more to say about this place that hasn't been said. It kinda sucks that they keep raising their prices, but when your only alternative for fast, dirty, drive-thru Mexican is another Alerto's located less than a mile away down the street, what are you gonna do? My favorite thing to get here is the carnitas burrito. It's way better than carne asada which I find to be rather tough and dry. The rolled tacos with guacamole and cheese are another favorite. The carne asada nachos (or fries) here are okay if you don't get beans with it, but sometimes the chips are stale. However, I find the portion to be pretty small considering an order sets you back about $8. They probably make $6 profit per box sold. Regardless of what you get, add a Horchata (cinnamon rice drink) and you're set.

Three words: Carne Asada Fries. For $7 dollars, you can enjoy heaven on earth. I heard about Alerto's back in college. My friends and I would go here after a late night of studying and indulge in delicious artery clogging goodness. Anyway, I always get the carne asada fries (i.e. super fries). It has guacamole, onions, sour cream, cheese, carne asada, and of course french fries. I can't really speak about any of the other items on the menu, since thats all I really ever get. Anyway, I think you can also get a half order, if I remember correctly, for around $5 dollars. there really isn't a difference between the normal size and the half order size, so take your pick. Whenever I have a craving for carne asada fries, I come to Alerto's.

I was in the area for a dismal affair and the wife and I were seeking some comfort food. The food is great and the portions are large. I got the Carnitas fries, the full size, which were delicious yet way too much for me to eat myself.

The Fish Burrito here is awesome. crunchy and the tortilla is just a good quality one, and they cook it a bit too on the grill. remember to ask for the bottle of salsa picante that's in the drink refrigerator.

A trip to Alertos. Now this takes effort, but the glutton inside you is already salivating, doing a happy dance, and prepping for a food coma. Two things: Bring cash and bring a friend. Oh, one more thing, roll up your windows, cuz Fountain Valley smells like sewage off the 405. So you pull off of Brookhurst and make that turn towards Alertos. It doesn't look like much. It looks dirty, I mean even the friggin windows look greasy, like someone took their burrito and tried to clean the panes. Why would they do it you ask? I have no idea, they're delicious. I wouldn't waste my tortilla on a window. And the bathrooms. Oh... the bathrooms. As you pull up towards the drive-thru service window, you can seriously reach out your car window, pull the bathroom door open and help wipe the butt of whoever is inside. So why would you make a trip to an establishment that demands cash in our plastic consumer world, cleans their windows with grease, and has sketch bathrooms? It's simple. The carne asada fries. The fish burrito. The breakfast burrito. Warm flavorful tortillas. LOADED carne asada fries that aren't too salty (like alejandros in costa mesa) Please have some self-respect and self control. Drive to your destination before ripping that yellow paper off your burrito. Eyes on the road, buddy. If I look over and you're trying to drive with one hand while getting a forkful of starchy fry, melted cheese, pico de gallo, guac, sour cream, and cubes of carne asada in the other, I will ram your car and send that styrofoam platter onto the floor. However, if you heeded my former advice and brought a friend, well then you have an extra pair of eyes and hands, now, don'tcha?

I've said it before(not here, but..) and I'll say it again. I have a sharks palate. When I was a kid I ate up whatever was dropped in front of me. Meat, fruit, and yes even green vegetables. Food was this youngling's friend. Coming from an Anglo-Saxon family that had settled in the south, we had little of what the world would call culture. I'm not knocking it but, what ended up in a suburban city in Southern California with hamburgers, hot dogs, and miracle-whip sandwiches; are not examples of the culture that I will briefly explain. Summers stretched from Texas to Illinois. We had fish, shrimp, crawfish and lobster from the lakes, and sea. Meat from the farm and from the wild. Ocra, corn, and collard greens from the field, watermelon from the patch, blackberries from the vine and green apples from a tree. Smoky BBQ's, steamy kitchens, freshly squeezed lemon juice and sun maid tea. Those were good times. From blue skies over green fields, to lightning bugs below starry nights. At home, coming from that background our Mexican dishes were less than authentic to say the least. We're talking ground beef and chili beans with a package of lawry's taco seasoning. Garnished with tomatoes, lettuce, onions and pace picante. My mom, bless her, did the best she knew how and my dad and I would race through a meal like sailors at sea. "And it was good!" so says the goat. As you get older and out of the house you start to understand culture. Alerto's captures the essence of what I consider, authentic. They even have fresh chips, salsa and a hand written "cash only" sign on the cash register. Don't fret, for the ATM machine, is right behind you.

El restaurante de Alertos Mexican Food es muy delicioso :) It may not look like much, but the food they serve is genuine Mexican food, you get a truly fulfilling meal for what you pay, and it's super duper yummy! I've tried the Carne Asada Burrito, Vegetarian Burrito, and Quesadilla. After eating those three items, the burritos are definitely their specialty. They are about 7 inches long with a width of around 2 inches and filled with veggies and avocado. You HAVE TO try them.

Easily, the best carne asada fries and nachos around! Alertos is a cool drive thru and eat in that offers some pretty good mexican food! I typically order a half-order of carne asada nachos with no guacamole if its lunch or dinner time. However, the best part of alertos is their breakfast burrito. No fast food chain, morning doughnut shop, or coffee spot can't beat the taste and price of an Alertos breakfast burrito. Their hot sauce that they include with it makes it even better, and after one bite, you're gonna wish the burrito was size comparable to that of a chipotle burrito. The drive thru does take a while sometimes, but it's not too bad when you start tasting the food. I think the eat in area actually get's their food faster which is a little different compared to most fast food places. I highly recommend trying different things on the menu, especially if you love mexican food. And if you haven't gone yet, then you need to!

Awesome hole in the wall mexican place. Carne asada burrito is amazing but the carne asada taco probably has just as much meat so it's a hell of a deal for $3. I've also had the tacquitos which were spectacular. Salsa is really good and spicy, my fav is the avocado, followed by their spicy green. This place would get 5 stars if they weren't so stingy with their salsa. They don't have the containers out so you have to ask. I don't know why they don't just give you 2 containers when you order. I understand they are trying to crack down on salsa thieves but it's kind of ridiculous waiting there like a puppy begging for a treat.

I still can't get the names straight. Alertos, Alberto's, Alberta's. How many alias does this chain have? Regardless, the food does the name right at this location. The breakfast burrito is served all day and is chock full of eggs, ham, cheese and potatoes. The rolled tacos with guac is really tasty. The tortas are really good too. My only beef is with the carne asada. I've noticed that it no longer has charred marks, but instead it looks boiled. Not that I'm complaining. Stick it in a burrito, into the nachos, (my God) into a tray of greasy fries and you're in for some 'Come Bien'. The salsa bar is good, but the 'secret' sauce is in the red squirt bottles. Ask for it by name. Btw, I would have given 5 stars, but I just noticed that they no longer have Orange Bang. Son of a...

The fatty in me loves that this place has a drive through and is open until 4 am when i want to pig out watching family guy. My main attraction at this place is the carne asada nachos and fries. I prefer the carne asada nachos to the fries because i love the crispy textures of the chips with the soft carne asada and all the other stuff i never focus on because i am too busy eating, but im pretty sure its sour cream, guacamole, beans, cheese, salsa, etc. The burritos are really good here also. As someone mentioned earlier, it's definitely a better alternative to del taco or taco bell.

This place is great. They have large portions with great beans & rice. They are fast through the drive through and fairly priced. The flautas combination comes with FOUR large rolled flour tortilla and meat flautas. I always over-eat when eating Alertos. I have had take-out from here numerous times, & will continue to include it in my cheat meal rotation.

BLAR! I went here to find some San Diego-equivalent CA burritos, carnitas/carne asada fries, and/or rolled tacos. Did not find it here up to snuff, sadly - BUT I will say that it's pretty damn good in its own sense and priced well. Salsa bar if you eat in is also beastly great! I'm going to try the Alberto's next to see if it's what I'm looking for. Tacos here are like burritos. Burritos are like twice your average burrito sizes. Everything served hot and made to order - it's all solid, but not SD quality! The search continues.

We were driving from NorCal and came straight here. Carne asada burrito ($4.30) is so delicious... steak and guacamole is really all you need. Although the size of the burrito has seem to have shrunken over the years. The 3 rolled tacos with guacamole ($2.60) was not as good as other places' because they were just over fried and too hard to bite through. The meat was also dry and tasteless inside. It's normally $2 but if you want guacamole or sour cream, add an extra $.60. If you need to do your business, there are bathrooms on the left hand outside of the restaurant. However it's also located right by the drive through so if you come out without looking, you could potentially get hit by a car. Beware.

A pretty decent burrito for a GREAT price. I only wish I'd read the reviews more thoroughly and picked carne asada instead of carnitas--the carnitas was a little fatty for me. Great pico and guacamole in the burrito (though warning, leftovers did NOT reheat well). It definitely hit the spot, and nothing is more convenient than a drive through, especially if you're in a rush! I will definitely visit again when I'm back in Fountain Valley.

This is my favorite Mexican food place. The food is amazing. I always order a carne asada burrito, an adobado burrito, and their carne asada fries... delicious. I highly recommend this place if you want amazing authentic Mexican food. The prices are moderately fair. totally Worth the drive!!!

  • Tin N.

This place has one of the meatiest carne asada burritos I have ever seen. Whereas other burritos has rice, beans, and all that other good stuff, this thing is just pico de gallo (the fresh tomato sals) and meat! Its huge, and the tortilla is nicely toasted for you on the outside. Their fish tacos are also damn good. I was tempted to give this place a five, but I do think the quality of the ingredients could be a little better. But for less than 5 bucks, this place is a great value for a burrito, and there's other things on the menu that are damn good as well. Tip: For Nacho orders you can as for a half size, which is not on the menu. Its half the price, but apparently nearly the same size as a full!

Awesome joint for Mexican food, even when it's super late at night. After a long night of pounding beer and shots, there's something comforting about stuffing your face with a piping hot Breakfast Burrito, and sharing Carne Asada Fries (and sometimes Pollo Asada Fries) with all your buddies. Wash it all down with an extra large Horchata and you're good to go.

Thanks once again to my fellow yelpers for suggesting Alertos!! I had a bean and cheese burrito and an order of rolled tacos with guacamole. The prices are slightly higher than other places, but they make up for it with large portions and quality. I am planning to try the super nachos on my next visit.

I'm a big believer that Mexican food should not be expensive and Taco Bell is not Mexican food. My favorite is the carnitas burrito that's stuffed with pork with some tomatoes and avocado. Their hot sauce is yummy as well and I don't even like hot sauce cause my stomach can only handle so much heat.

Open late, hang over or post drinking food at its best hahaha.... this place is the pre or post hang over cure.... or if your just looking for a fatty fast food mexican joint thats not del taco or taco bell.... The breakfast burritos for $3-4 bucks are awesome, the carne asad burrito equal... but the coup de gras are the carnes asada fries... holf wtf hahha this ish is the bomb... it will leave you feeling heavy but is also very veryt fulfilling...rookies get a half order...... serious if you are from So Cal and have never heard of an alerto's you need to wake the F up and get here...just sayin

A typical order for the boyfriend and me : - Half order of carne asada nachos (with no beans or onions because the boyfriend doesn't like them) - Carne asada burrito - Large Horchata - LOTS of hot sauce Honestly, there are billions of Mexican fast-food joints around the O.C. but what sets apart any one of them are the sauces. The boyfriend has eaten here since middle school, so he swears by their sauce. I do agree, not many compare to its flavor. If you're deciding on whether to eat here or any other place starting with an 'A' and ending with an 'os', just take the one closest to you. Living near UCI, I usually go to Albatros in LakeForest whose food is delicious, but the salsas are a little lacking. When I do find the time and energy to make the trek, I always burp in happiness. It is cash only, so be prepared!

  • Vince F.

Authentic as it gets around orange county. Maybe it's because I don't expect much, but every time I go here the portions are huge (I end up saving some for later) and it tastes good. Now, I'm mostly comparing this to the big chain mexican restaurants, so it might not mean as much, but if I'm in the mood for cheap mexican food, I go here. If I want GOOD mexican food, I go to Javiers. It might not be authentic, but it sure tastes good and it's clean. I don't think I'd eat around Alertos.

Fish burrito all the way. Their food is good but prices keep going up everytime and at times, I feel like the portions are getting smaller. I always pair my burrito with an horchata, lime and hot sauce on the burrito.

I wonder what the owner was thinking . Hmmm... I want to give my taco shop a unique name - something special. Robertos? Dang, that's taken. Albertos? Nah, that's taken too. How about... Alertos? Besides the name, nothing is particularly unique about this place. But it is solid carne asada burrito. Steak - with no gristle. Guac and pico, just like what I'm used to in San Diego. No bastardized mission style burrito with all the cheap fillers. Makes me feel at home when I'm away from home. And yeah, they might be a little longer and a little smaller, but it does hit the spot. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

  • Paula L.

I come here for one thing and one thing only: carne asada fries. There are two sizes I have become aware of: half size ($6), full size ($8). What is the difference between the two? I have NO idea. But the half is cheaper so I go with that. I LOVE their carne asada fries. The other place I have tried, Alejandro's just seems too damn greasy and gross compared to here. Alertos seems more....gourmet (odd isn't it?). They don't skimp out on portions at all. BEWARE!

Good Chile reyeno burrito. Bummer only cash. No debit cards. Clean and quick. Dining area too small.

  • Damon T.

Any time I'm in the mood for authentic Mexican food in exchange for less cash, Alerto's is the place. I've been eating here for years, and there are two things I always come back for: the carne asada burrito, and carne asada fries. Alerto's clearly isn't what you might call "gourmet"- the meat isn't the highest quality, I've had better guacamole, and so forth- but this seems to be a case where the end product is greater than the sum of its parts. Others may claim that these "-erto's" chains are all the same, but for me there just isn't a better cheap burrito in OC. The lard-soaked tortilla is deliciously unhealthy, the meat is flavorful with a slight crunch, and the hot sauce adds a tangy kick to each bite. It's the perfect solution to a hangover or just extreme hunger pangs. If you want to step it up a notch, go for the carne asada fries. It's literally the same as an order of "super nachos" (with carne asada, beans, cheese, guac, the works), but instead of chips, everything is piled on top of a bed of crunchy french fries. Get the half order, because it alone is nearly impossible for me to finish.

    (5)
  • Matt K.

I typically come here late night when I need a quick bite to eat. The typical order consists of a Breakfast burrito and a drink. The taste never lets me down and the prices are great. The portions are huge for what you're paying. The only downside I can see is that it is cash only, but there is an ATM inside.

Carne Asada Fries. All that needs to be said. If you're looking for something to eat in the middle of the night and sick of Denny's, this is the spot. Come here for drunk food, munchies, or even when cross faded ahah. Don't come here too too late because sometimes the quality lacks. The carne asada and fish burritos are pretty good too since they are meaty and light on the other stuff. One of my gripes was that my order of carne asada fries had fries that weren't fully cooked. Tasted pretty hard and cold. Also, no debit cards and the drive thru is at an awkward position. Come here for great Mexican food if Los Sanchez is closed or if you're super hammered. Nothing is better than Mexican food under the influence. Hell, nothing is better than Mexican food when you're sober.

Alertos! This location is what I like to call Alertos #2; Alertos #1 is on right up the street and if you ask me, I will tell you that it doesn't make too much of a difference since I go there for their carna asada fries or nachos, and to make the meal just right-a large horchata! No ice :)

Hey you....if you are craving meaty yummy carne asada nachos, this place is for you. Just order "The Super Nachos" and your cravings will finally be satisfied. The only qualm that I have is that Alertos needs to be more consistent with the tenderness of the asada; however, the beef is still delish. I recommend the carne asada burrito, super nachos, carne asada fries, and the Chorizo "heart attack" breakfast burrito. In the end, this place is very tasty and affordable, but make sure to eat healthy all week before coming here.

This is a Mexican restaurant that looks like a dive but has a number of very positive reviews. French Fry Review: They have large, frozen, bland , mushy fries, overall terrible. The only reason these have been considered good in other reviews must be that they offer them covered with carne asada, if it is good, it has nothing to do with their terrible fries.

You know, it's pretty weird having another one of these just a couple of blocks down from the other. (Brookhurst x2) Anyhow, my boyfriend introduced the Machaca burrito to me today, and no longer will I eat any other breakfast burrito from a shitty fast food joint again. Eggs, green/red peppers, and beef (not sausage, but kind of like asada). Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhboy.

I love Alertos! They have the best tasting authentic Mexican food ever...BUT three stars is what I must rate Alertos at now. They keep raising their prices and its almost not really worth it anymore. I just went there last night and I was shocked on how expensive it is now. I'm kinda pissed about it but I will keep coming here, just not as much. That's really my only complaint.

My Vietnamese Friends used to drag me to this place late at night--man could those little dudes eat--and never gain a pound! So it was fun to see some serious, obnoxious eating. I would get some taquitos that were not good--but I was just there to watch my friends, and the drunks who come here to suck down greasy, hot food. Now that I don't have time to sit around and eat bad food for the hell of it--never came back. Wonder why?

INCONSISTENT!!!!!!!!!! One morning, we get a delicious Carne Asada Burrito, just meat, onions and guac wrapped in a hot grilled tortilla. Just the right balance of flavorful meat, onions and guac. The seasoning on the meat is a little odd (soy sauce and msg in there?), but tastes ok with the other ingredients. Then less than 12 hours later, another Carne Asada Burrito, this one a disaster. Far too much bad meat, no onion, meat is very old, tough and off tasting. It's like a bunch of chopped up rotten shoe leather wrapped in a tortilla. Awful. We couldn't finish half before throwing it away in disgust. Carnitas Burrito was ok, a few bits of meat were cold (not fully reheated?). Breakfest Burrito was blandest I've ever had, eggs overcooked, almost no meat, no seasoning at all. Their included "salsa" is like cheap taco sauce. I'd give it 2 stars, but it gets an extra for being open 24 hours with a drive through window.

Best of all the cheap Mexican places.... Great food. Not gourmet or anything, but really good food and large portions. I go here all the time and haven't found anything that is as good. I have been coming here for years and years.

No one will believe me to this day except my good friend Allison who was able to witness it. In one sitting, I was able to not only eat, but DEVOUR a breakfast burrito and carne asada burrito... i repeat, IN ONE SITTING. If you've ever been here, you know how big the burritoes are! yes that is a feat in itself. Thank you.

After reading reviews on Yelp, I decided to give this place a shot. Driving by, I was thinking, wow, what a dump. Looks like an old converted taco bell or something. The sunroom windows were dripping with condensation. I made a joke to my wife about that being the sign of an awesome restaurant. Well, it is! Great tasting food. We ordered some potato and chorizo tacos as well as some bacon and potato tacos for breakfast. So good! I came back a few days later for lunch and got the Carne Asada fries that everyone on Yelp is raving about. They weren't wrong! We'll be going back whenever we find ourselves in Fountain Valley again.

Yes, their burritos have gotten smaller and now they charge for some condiments if you go through the drive-thru. I eat here out of convenience and when I'm in the mood for "dirty" Mexican food. My menu selection has been limited to fish burritos, carnitas burritos, taquitos or rolled tacos as they have it on their menu, carne asada in burritos and on nachos. Everyone raves about the carne asada, but in my opinion its mediocre. The quality of the beef isn't that great and to me it doesn't even appear to be marinated or seasoned with anything before they throw it on the grill. You definitely need to add hot sauce to give it flavor. I tend to go to this location versus their other location farther North on Brookhurst ( yelp.com/biz/alertos-mex… ).

I like their tacos and taquitos~ always get the taquitos~

Will come here to get carne asada fries (hold the beans!) or carne asada nachos. Usually had to go to Alejandro's down in costa mesa / newport area because Alerto's didn't carry the 'California Burrito' (carne asada fries in a burrito wrap). Now it occured to me writing this review.. why dont' I just ask them to add the fries for me (duhhh...)

  • Suelene C.

I've been to Alertos many times and usually after midnight too. The wait is usually not that long and the service is friendly, even though they don't really speak English. Let me tell you they have the BEST horchata!! It really tastes homemade. Their burritos are really good too!! You really get the bang for your buck. Their tacos are even better! But be careful, it's really oily, actually all of the food is oily. But overall, the food is pretty cheap I'd like to say and I would definitely come here again for a late night munchy!

A great casual hole in the wall Mexican food joint venue place. Everything on the menu looks like a winner but I always stick with the Carne Asada Fries with everything (guacamole, sour cream, diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro) and then throw on more extra onions and cilantro. Everyone I go with though chooses something different but in the end they are all excellent mechanisms to deliver asada, carnitas or pollo. Portions are huge so less is more. For the Carne Asada fries, go with the 1/2 order (which is really a 3/4 order) or split it. There are two locations on Brookhurst but this one in my opinion is better. BTW CASH ONLY!

  • Jennifer N.

I suppose out of the two Alerto's on brookhurst, I frequent this the most since it's walking distance from my place. The food here is definitely a hit or miss. And for all you California Burrito lovers, please do me a favor and get your ass to Albertross where the California Burritos reign supreme. The fries are actually crispy and they don't charge you for pickled vegetables. But since its not worth the distance, Alerto's soggyness will have to do.

In an economy as encouraging as George Bush's approval ratings, where can one satisfy his Herculean appetite yet retain spare change for other worldly pleasures (like ice cream)? Look no further then your friendly neighborhood hole-in-the-wall Mexican place, Alertos. I mean, I paid less than 15 bucks for a chicken burrito w/ guac, carne asada fries, and a large (read: HUGE) taramindo drink. That's a meal that can feed even the Hulk. The carne asada fries easily beat stuff you can get in the San Diego area, which is impressive given that it's much further from the border. The burrito had a warm, grilled tortilla, and enough guac to make messy eaters look like they just barfed an avocado shake. My homies tried the tacos and enchiladas, and the feedback was nothing but border-line moaning from the orgasm in their mouths. For maximum dollar-maximization, however, get the fries. I implore you.

This place is one of the best fast food mexican places i have ever been to. their carne asada fries are so incredibly yummy. its topped with a generous amount of carne asade, salsa, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. A half order will do it for me. i've recently tried the adobada fries, which is the same concept as carne asada, but with a different meat. The breakfast burrito is probably one of the best ive ever tried. if you're looking to stay on the safe side, get the carne asada burrito. The fish burrito is also a good one. The quesidillas can be a bit on the greasy side, but who actually goes there for a quesidilla anways. There always seems to be a long line in the drive through, but it is much worth the late. It's also good after a long night of drinking!

I LOVE ALERTOS. I've been going here since high school and it never fails me! I always get a breakfast burrito with sour cream, carne asada fries (probably what they're known for most!), and horchata. God, I want some right now...

  • Andy C.

I remember back in the good old days where a carne asada burrito was only 2.50....but hey that all changed when they started to expand but anyway....its good food....i gotta admit that but its the kind of food you dont wanna stare at too long =P...you might find some surprises...but that rarely happens lol enjoy xP

When is it a good time to eat at Alerto's...? All the time... You cannot beat this place for quick, delicious, filling food. Although I think they had bigger portions in the past, it is always flavorful and satisfying. So many good things you have to try. The burritos might be the best anywhere and the tortas (Mexican sandwich) are pretty good too. If you have not eaten here... what the hell are you waiting for?

  • Kathy H.

I LOVE ALERTOS. I grew up in this area and it was always my favorite place to go. I live in Seattle now, but each time I come back to OC, I have to make a stop here. My cousin loves their breakfast burrito, but I always get the fish burrito with the hot sauce. It's a great run for the value, and open late to satisfy strange cravings. :) I wish they would open one in Seattle!!

  • Alyson B.

Oh. Hell. Yes. Pros: Big portions for very small amount of $. Delicious food (the carne asada burrito is NOT to be missed). Ordering a cheapo side of chips & guac gets you this enormous box of chips with guac and cheese-- omg. I have died and gone to guacamole heaven. Enchiladas are also good. I have never disliked anything I have gotten here. It's fast (drive through), open late, and awesome. Carne asada burrito and a large horchata please. Cons: Cash only, so hit up the atm first.

only got betta cuz i miss my college days. hellavagoodtime!!! nothing special. got my usual, a pollo asado burrito and half fries (you can ask to have half pollo asado half steak or half shrimp or have carnitas) hell they dont care. i still had enough money to get churros, horchata and a gumball from the gumball machine. they do it all, todo!!!

  • Sandra A.

From the outside, it looks like a hole-in-the-wall place, but the food is really good. It may get a little pricey but the carne asada is excellent. I'm not much for Mexican food, but my kids think it's pretty good and we've made quite a few night runs to get some food here when we were hungry. I give it two thumbs up!

  • Loren John B.

I'd take this place over Alejandro's any day. Albertaco's is good too but its too damn far compared to this place. Well, it'll do since its in the area. The fact they carry carne asada fries done well automatically gives them a good rating. Even their pollo asado fries are just as good. Its one of the first places near Irvine that does half orders, which is filling itself. Carne asada and California burritos are done right here, as well as their quesadillas. Order inside so you can get as much hot sauce/salsa you want at the bar. I'm a big fan of chile verde sauce. Man I love hole-in-the-wall Mexican food. The problem here is the half order costs almost as much as a full order used to be, and the full order runs to over 8 bucks (6 bucks for a half). Actually the full price isn't so bad, but it was cheaper like a year ago. Laaaaaaaame. Thank you so much U.S. economy. Oh, cash only. Theres banks nearby and stuff, but otherwise fork over an extra couple bucks to use their ATM. Cheerio.

I have never had anything that I didn't like from here. The carnitas burrito is amazing! The one item I keep going back to time and again though are the carne asada fries! Get the half order, it's huge and a couple of bucks less than the full order. You can't go wrong with the breakfast burrito either. It's packed with eggs, potatos, bacon, ham, and cheese. I personally LOVE the tortillas that they use for their burritos. And the salsa in the squeeze bottle (if youre dining in), or the little cups (take out) is a must! So much flavor and not too spicy.

    (5)
  • Jon O.

I like the carnitas burrito here(I'll give it 4 stars)--tons of meat for sure and good flavor, its better than the carne asada burrito to me anyway. Based on reviews, I will have to try the asada nachos, but swaying me is going to be a challenge for sure. Nothing else on the menu has struck me as extraordinary, but then again .... should I be looking for extraordinary when dining at such a lovely establishment??? Pretty good cheap eats for sure...breakfast burrito and the california burrito (it has asada, I think) were pretty good too. Their tortillas are super...where can I buy em?

This is the late model Chevy of Mexican food: it's not gonna win any awards, but it's reliable and it gets you where you wanna go. The food is prepared quickly and consistently. Good sides of rice and beans, nice big flour tortillas. Enchiladas, tacos, taquitos, chiles rellenos, and carnitas are decent, cheap, and filling. There is a surprisingly efficient drive thru, which gets a lot of use. What I love about this place is that it's real close, open late, friendly, and GREAT fried chiles. No credit cards is a drag, partly offset by the low prices.

FAV FAST MEX FOOD IN THE WORLD!!!!!! 3 things I always get....not at the same time how ever. 1) Carne Asada plate 2) Carne Asada quesadilla w/ sour cream and guac 3) half nachos and you should try the guac salsa!

  • T M.

I've been eating here for years. The food is fantastic & the prices are unbeatable. The dining room is small & they have a bit of a condensation problem as seen on the inside of the windows. Therefore, I don't usually 'dine in.' However, the food makes up for it. The menu is extensive and they are open late at night too :)

great burritos at amazing prices are found here.....and its just walking distance from work!...i am a big fan of their veggie and bean burrito. the veggie has everything in it.....chopped up finely....beans,rice, bell pepper, tomato, onion, lettuce, cilantro and avocado... many sauces to choose from .....including pico de gallo, avocado and tomatillo salsa, spicey fire roasted sauces to milder ones.... the sauce adds the finishing touch. especially when you are having the bean burrito.....i add plenty of pico de gallo for the added veggies.. :) and i love horchata....but it was a little on the sweet side for me here.....that's alright though....i still have my favs here to come back to.... :) Btw...I am only rating this location.....

"I hurt. I'm never going to eat again!" as I devour on the last chip of half a pound of carne asada nachos. I come here knowing I'm going to feel like crap and slip into food coma. I don't care. I'm going to eat the nachos anyways cause its that good. And Mexican food can't be any good unless it makes you feel like rolling over and blowing up. If that's my last chip smothered in gooey guac and carne asada, I've known that I died eating in heaven.

There are only three things you need to know about this place: 1. Carne Asada burrito (can't go wrong, though some other people from my church recommend mixed burrito, but go with the carne asada. it doesn't get better than that) 2. salsa bar (ask for a tray and then get the one that has like... some cucumber. it should be the one that's most depleted. that's how good it is. i have yet to ask what it actually is, but it's good. ask for a small tray, you won't regret it). 3. hot sauce (they keep in in the mini-fridge in the front. it's the red bottle. it makes up for the somewhat dry part of carne asada, almost as good as the salsa. almost. but you have to get this. i like pouring it over my little tray of salsa) It's small, you might pass it. However, it is amazing. Like, very comparable to San Diego Mexican cuisine. So remember: carne asada burrito, salsa bar, and hot sauce. Oh, and very good value.

I've only been here a couple times, but it is amongst the best of these type of Mexican fast food joints I've been to. I had the pollo asado and the shrimp burritos. The pollo was great, but the shrimp really stood out. Most of these places have small shrimp and usually fried, but here it is grilled with onions and peppers and they do it perfectly. I really loved the shrimp burrito. I've also had the carne asada fries, which were pretty good, but they didn't use the thin fries that I'm used to getting at other places and that I prefer more. Can't wait to go back and try something else. Dang went again and it wasn't as good. Consistency can be an issue here.

  • Cindy T.

This place isn't too bad. I do think that the one on Brookhurst and McFadden is better. But the difference is hardly noticeable. I would totally prefer it if they accept anything other than cash. I'm not a cash person. I would totally eat here more often if I'm wise enough to carry cash w/ me as opposed to being completely dependent on my credit cards.

I've been eating at this place since way back when it was Alberto's. Carne asada burrito, add cheese and sour cream. Chips and guacamole. Three rolled tacos with guac. I can go on forever. Eat here. I promise you won't be disappointed.

really impressed by this location tonight. i've been laying off the alertos for a while. but tonight it was awesome. i remember the food at this alertos' seems to have better quality than the one located north on brookhurst. and tonight it really showed. salsa bar seemed fresher too. horchata was just okay as usual. not sure why i don't love it as much as others i've had. from 3 stars to 5, crazy. but they earned it. i had a great time.

For the price and quality. you can't beat this chain of cheap and hearty mexican fast food. There are other Alerto's locations that is better. This one is the average

While I was going to UCI, Alerto's was practically the place to go late at night since everything in Irvine closes at 9. At first I only had their chicken and carne asada burritos, which are both excellent. The chicken burrito however has practically nothing but chicken inside of it (my friend refers to it as a chicken log), so make sure to add in any extras you may like. Then I discovered their carne asada fries, and this place went from good cheap food to awesome cheap food. French fries covered in carne asada, guacamole, sour cream, and cheese. Don't even think about using your hands to eat this either...just fork it up. It's available as a full order and a half order, but don't be fooled - the half order is really about 3/4 of a full order, and is usually way more than enough for one person. Some people swear to getting carne asada nachos as opposed to fries, but I find the nachos much harder to eat as you can't really fork them, plus the nachos get soggy quicker. They also offer the california burrito here (both the carne asada fries and california burrito are not listed on the menu, just ask), which is french fries and carne asada in a burrito form, but it's lacking the guacamole and sour cream from and just isn't the same. For the record, I've tried carne asada fries at other places whenever I can, including Alejandro's in Costa Mesa, Taco Spot in Eagle Rock, My Taco in Highland Park, and Alberto's in Temple City, and this place still has the best ones.

I'm going to get slack for this review but so what. I'll tell you what I recommend here. Three things. Carne asada burrito, Fish burrito, and half nachos with carne asada. Nuff said. Don't get the full nachos cause it's the same thing as a half nacho just little more money. Don't order the fish burrito after 9pm. More than likely, it's not fresh. Trust me on this one. A lot pepto used on this place. Why the low rating? When it was 3-3.50 a pop for a carne asada burrito, this place was good. But how do you raise prices and make the burrito smaller? Not only that, but you stuff things like carrots in there? bullcrap! They're also charging extra for sauce too. I know the economy is beaten up but let's not rip off the customer too much. When they're not stuffing the burrito with worthless crap like carrots, it's actually pretty good. Until they make burritos like they used to, I can't give them a higher rating.

hmm alertos yummy! damn i haven't been their for while but i'll write a brief review of my past times. First alertos is just like los primos. Big burrito and etc.. Last time i went i got the enchilda combo which comes with rice and beans. I also got a their desert churro which was like 2.99. good stuff the best churro i had! Over all this is like los primos, mario and etc. cheap mexican food that is filling for the buck!

Came here to quench a late night burrito craving and decided on a breakfast burrito it was fairly large and pipimg hot. I was disappointed there didnt seem to be any bacon in iy and they used potatoes instead of french fries but over all it was pretty decent.

If this place wasn't all glass windows in the public seating areas and had a solid wall I am 95% positive the proprietors would have hung a picture of me up on the wall by now (whether in honor of me or as a reminder to keep off the premises is unclear). For a while I would go here for a late night meal when everything else was closed and sample the menu. But I no longer sample the menu. No matter how incapacited my decision making ability is when I am physically at Alerto's, one single decision is crystal clear despite any multiple of my vision at the present time: carne asade fries. You can't go wrong if you survive the grease. The drive thru is convenient and is one of the only drive thrus worldwide with a drive thru restroom as well. Beware though as this co-ed public toilet has seen equal parts ass and face in its lifetime. Given the circumstances its cleanliness is actually quite impressive (it is, granted, a 24 hour public toilet attached to a 24 hour Mexican restaurant). If you know what you are getting into from the outset with this place, 5 stars. I gave it 4 because sometimes I wish the carne asada fries were well done since they get a bit soggy under the weight of countless iterations of cheese, guac, sour cream, grease and carne asada. It has been well documented that a visit here late night can fend off a hangover the following morning as the grease lines your stomach serving as a pace monitor for alcohol permeating into your bloodstream.

alertos food is the best in he world! i can't stop eating at this place! Really Great for a latenight snack! If Al's 1 (The one next to KFC and Banh Me Chi Cali) is super busy you can always go up the street to Al's #2)

FYI alerto hates alberto's, arsenio's, filiberto's etc... (jk).. in the late 90's the alerto's on mcfadden was way too asian gangster for my taste, so i hit up the FV spot. fish burrito, half order of super nachos and quesadilla is what i like

Good for gettin your money's worth. Can't go wrong with the breakfast burrito, carne asada nachos. Well worth the money. It will fill you up too. Just don't eat too much because you might have to spend some time in the crapper =/. pretty greasy too

I prefer this of the other Mexican stand choices because they're fairly reliable, even though sometimes they're not open when they're supposed to be. Ok...so I mean reliable in terms of the food. I love the California burritos and carnitas tortas. They never give enough hot sauce though...you don't even have to check, just ask for more.

Okay. If you want seriously awesome, gringo style Mexican food, then you have found heaven on earth at Alertos. Granted, portions could feed a small army, but having that extra awesomeness for breakfast the next morning is completely worth it. So lets start with my favorites: The breakfast burrito. Definitely my numero uno! So good. You have no idea. I don't even know how to describe it. If I wasn't on a diet, I would eat one of these for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and all snacks, They are that good - especially with the salsa verde. The chicken tacos. I only get 1 because they are that huge and have that much chicken. In fact they are mostly chicken and tortilla. I love it - especially with the salsa verde. The chorizo and egg burrito. My Grandmother has been making chorizo and eggs every holiday since I was born and Alertos is the only thing that really comes close... and for that I love this burrito. Try it with the salsa verde. Finally, the salsas. As you can see, I am very partial to the salsa verde. It is the right type of spiciness for me. They also have an awesome avocado salsa, chipotle salsa, and salsa fesca. I recommend all of them. Seriously. Don't expect a fine dinning experience here. This is a go in your PJ's @ 1:00 in the morning type of place. There will always been a line inside and at the drive through... so just expect it. You will love this place - trust me. OH - but it is cash only. However, they do have an ATM inside.

My daughter and sister in law from Las Vegas crave the carne asada fries... but for my money I can't get past the three rolled tacos with guacamole (taquitos)... I never could understand how they could glob on fresh guacamole like they do, along with a glob of shredded cheddar cheese and then only charge $3 plus tax... it seemed criminal for me to except such a great deal... go anywhere else and you would have to pay twice that just for the guacamole... I tried ordering more out of guilt, but always regretted getting something else because it was too much for me to eat. I'm sure my daughter and my sister in law would give Alertos 5 stars for the carne asada fries... Oh... I do get the breakfast burrito also... it's enormous and chuck full of cheese, egg, ham, sausage, and hash browns... other than that I can't help you out... O.K., go order the rolled tacos with guacamole and let me know how you like it... worth the drive huh?

Alertos is awesome. They serve authentic "ertos" style mex, if you know what I mean. They have California burritos and carne asada fries. Yea.

My absolute favorite place to grab a burrito or two in my case and some of the best carne asada fries not located in San Diego. This place is just a beat down shack but it sure serves some really proper food for a wonderful price. You can get 2 burritos that are the half the size of an average mans arms for under ten bucks. And as mentioned earlier the carne asada fries are just mouth wateringly beautiful its almost a shame that a trip to the bathroom for some bowel expuslion chaos is its aftermath. Unfortunatley for me I live in Pasadena and dont hang out in HB anymore.... hey anyone remember "the pierce street annex" that bar was fun fun fun!

Authenic Mexican food that is priced very moderately, yet the portions are good for two in one order. Its the best to eat when your craving anything from burritos to nachos. I always get the carnes asada burrito/nachosfries, fish burrito, and horchata. Its my favorite mexican place to eat at.

    (3)
  • Jonas O.

I either get carnitas fries & a carne asada burrito & large horchata lol OR carne asada fries & carnitas burrito & large horchata lol But I share of course Omgosh when I have my 'I am craving fatty food' moments... I only think of this place... Their quesadillas are greasy and delicious Their carne asada nachos are good mmm fatty food :]

  • Steve C.

Drove by it for over 10 years and never thought about trying it till I read the reviews on Yelp. Definitely a step up over other fast food joints. The fish and carne asada burritos are very good. Prices were so low I felt like I had to order something else to avoid going away hungry, so I got chips and guacamole, which for $2.70 or so was a surprisingly huge pile of chips, decent guacamole and cheese. Definitely will go there again.

  • John D.

I don't think I've had a bad experience here, maybe because the late drunken eats dispose of that. It's just one of those places that all UCI students end up at, at least once if not for the 1st week that we are here. I can't eat anything other than Carne Asada fries or Nachos here, make sure to get it super crispy though or your fries will be soggy when you get to the finish line. If you can't a full one they also come in 1/2s for the days i can't decide upon either i get 1/2 of each.

great for any hour of the day cash only carne asada fries or chicken tostada so worth the drive from uci, esp after 2am

  • Yui S.

Alerto's prices went up by at least a dollar and some in the past year. Now, it's actually not so worth it anymore. There are other mexican fastfoods that are cheaper and same amount of food. Let's face it, food like this is not about quality, it's about quantity. So while Alertos may taste good, it's not cus it's "quality food." There are other places just like it.

  • Ron H.

*Edit* Alright, maybe it's still in my head, but I'm almost positive the burritos have shrunk over the years, with prices going up. Now, you can't get the pickled vegetables without paying extra either, not that I really care for those, but all these signs popping up nagging you about the extra fees you need to pay is just getting annoying. Refills, extra. Veggies, extra. Extra salsa at the drive through, extra. Oh well, I like their new cobb salad. *End Edit* Very tasty, depending on what you get of course. The fries taste of corn (I have a feeling they use the same fryer), the rolled tacos are bland, and the carne asada plate is dry. But, the carne asada burrito is an instant classic, as well as the breakfast burrito (served during all hours of operation), and the super nachos (get a half order). The carne asada quesadilla is good, too. Before they raised prices (by 30 cents or so), it used to be an incredible deal, but it's still a very good deal. And I'm not quite sure if it's just in my head or not, but I feel like the carne asada burrito has shrunk over the years (it's still pretty big, your average female friend will probably not finish it). They used to only take cash, and technically that is still true. I used to joke this was for tax evasion purposes, but I think it's just to cut costs. They have since added an ATM machine.

This place is good, can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I would come her more if a) I didn't live in Long Beach b) mexican food wasn't so unhealthy. My only complaint is the lady at the drive through is a bitch and stingy with the hot sauce and sometimes the hot sauce is watered down, but this wont keep me from coming back.

Three words: carne asada nachos. Very good, very cheap. Great mexican fast food. They are also open late (times seem to vary, but usually open when i drive by). I would give it five stars especially for the value, but I believe I may have got sick from it once.

rolled tacos with guacamole are amazing...ask for a few of their hot sauces...yum yum good...they're really sturdy taquitos...you can order them and drive home...almost 30 mins and they're still crispy and crunchy

MY FAVORITE FOOD EVER. I no longer live in OC, but everytime I come home I have to get some of this. They have grown to be stingy over the years and their portions are a lot smaller now. However the Carne Asada burrito, Fish Burrito with extra sour cream, Carne Asade Nachos/Fries, and Horchata are SUPER BOMB.

so i just found out 2 weeks ago that i have high cholesterol and decided i needed to make some changes by eating healthier. boy did that go out the window today when my buddy and i decided to get the carne asada nachos for lunch. yummy!!! now i have to go running/walking at the park later to walk off all this food...so worth it though :o) here's a little tip always get the half order instead of the full. it's practically the same portions but will save you a dollar or two which you can use to buy yourself a drink. i personally will never get a soda from there again though...i find it too syrup-y (gross!).

We came here for carne asada fries, but it wasn't on the menu. What the heck is up with that? Instead I had a bean and cheese burrito with carne asada in it. It was really good, but really, I'm ticked off that carne asada fries aren't on their printed menu! What the heck?! I guess this place is good because if I really feel like some greasy Mexican food at two in the morning, I can get it. It was pretty good, but I am still mad about my delicious delicious fries that I didn't get.

Food coma never felt sooooo good. This is the best Mexican fast food around. They must put crack in the secret sauce because I CRAVE their food morning, noon, and night... Don't go here if you're on a health kick, the food is delicious for a reason (and totally worth any feelings of guilt!). I usually get my strongest Alerto's cravings around 2am- Thank goodness they serve their breakfast burritos all day and stay open till 3am! WoO HoO! Lots of food for very little cash AND it's all delicious! Yuuuuuummy!

I will start by saying Alerto has stolen my heart. I love this place. It's a great place to go for a lot of food and not a lot of money. The carne asada nachos are the best; you get a huge order for not a lot of money. I will let you in on a secret, you can order "nacho fries" which are nachos but instead of the tortilla chips they add fries. I know it sounds kinda gross but its actaully really good yet bad for you. I am a big fan of their breakfast burrito however it will wipe you out for the entire day...must be the carbs.

I was here one day and ordered a taco and a CARNE ASADA burrito. My number was called and I went back to my table opened up my burrito box thing and it was a chimichanga it wasn't a big deal so I decided to eat my taco first then have them correct after. After I ate the taco I went up to the counter to the same lady that took my order and told her I'm sorry I ordered a carne asada burrito she straight up said no you said chimichanga and started arguing with me about how I said chimichanga then I said well I'm sorry it was a misunderstanding between the two of us but even after I was being nice about it she was still arguing w me and giving me dirty looks. The manager than came over told her the situation and said what I wanted by that time I wanted my money back and she said we usually don't do this but ill do it one time. Worst customer service ever!!!!! I know that places like alertos arent known for their customer service but I wasnt expecting for someone to argue back when I was calm throughout the whole process. Most restaurants would've just said I'm sorry and replace it for you..never going back ever again!

Came here tonight for dinner. Had the grilled chicken nachos, no beans (half order; man they should call it regular or large order). Stupid shit. It's not even half; I mean it's literally not that much more in the full order. Anyways, it totaled $5.98, which is pretty cheap! Way better than the last time I went, plus it tasted really good. 3 out of 5 stars because there's a b*tchass worker who always has this attitude while serving you food. If I was a girl, I'd coldclock her right in her face! It's very rare, she will be cordial or even friendly. Not even a thank you when she gives you the food. Please don't mistaken it for the younger girl. She's the cooler and more friendly one!

This is a wonderful place to eat when you're in the mood for a burrito. I love their fish burritos with extra hot sauce. The carne asada was also good but last time I found a piece of a toothpick in there. Other than that, it is a really good place and the prices are cheap. For the spicy lovers, remember to ask for extra hot sauce !

MUST get CARNE ASADA fries. trust the other yelpers, the carne asada fries are great. great after a night of partying. great for cheap college students who want to share a meal. make sure you come with an appetite as the fries come in a big to go box and you've got to eat those fries ASAP. no one like cold, soggy fries the next day.

This is an OK place if you're craving some mexican food - it will hit the spot. The carne asada here is mediocre compared to other places I've been to but will satisfy you for the moment if you really, really want some. Here they have thicker fries but I like the skinnier fries when I get carne asada fries, so for me that's minus points. However their carnitas fries and burritos are good and very flavorful

After a long night I was always happy to see Alertos was open....I always get a combo meal (Tostada, Enchilada, beans and rice) The rice is always good. The beans are always salty. And the drinks always taste like some kind of house cleaner....But its OK when nothing else except Denny's is open! And its pretty cheap. And the salsa is good.

Went there on a Yelp recommendation. I got the carne asada tacos combo and I was stuffed. Lots of food, but the price seemed high. Next time I won't get the combo and I will try something smaller. The car behind me got rolled tacos, I'll try that.

i've been going to alerto's for 7 years now. it was the first place i drove to during lunch in hs when i first got my license. i would have a carne asado burrito every other day! dang, to be 16 and able to consume the 5098450349853590+ calories in one carne asada burrito!!! love the pico and guac, can't go wrong with a carne asada burrito. love the carnitas, the pork is always really flavorful, juicy, and tender. the carne asada fries are a heart attack on a plate, but make sure to order a half order. basically the same portions sizes but half the price. or start yoru morning off right with a hearty breakfast burrito, filled with potatoes, eggs, cheese, bacon, and ham. soooooooooooooo good. make sure to coat everything you eat with a helping of their pico and hot sauce. do beware of the fire booty the next day. but trust, it is WELL WORTH IT!

I used to come here for the carne asada burrito, which I adored, but I think they changed the cut of meat they use because recently I found the carne asada to be a little tough. Of course it still doesn't take away the fact that it's the best place for a mexican fix in fountain valley. The food in general is very good and cheap. One thing I would recommend is for people to get away from the usual carne asada and/or breakfast burrito and try something new. Try the carnitas, chorizo, machaca, or their assortment of tortas (my new favorites) they are every bit as good as that carne asada burrito.

Geez, the Machaca Burrito is better than what I make at home, and that sez a lot. Outstanding. My new favorite Mexican fast food joint is Alerto's. I'm very grateful you guys recommended it--I never would have stopped there on my own. Outstanding! It's better tasting than El Conejo.

When it's good, it is surprisingly good! But that's the problem, they just aren't consistent. One of my favorite "plates" on the menu is the Chile Relleno Plate. It comes with two Chile Rellenos, rice, beans, pico di gallo, tortillas and salad with avocado and sour cream. Sometimes the Chile Rellenos are LARGE and taste so good they are memorable. Sometimes they border on JUNK. But for the VERY REASONABLE prices, even when they are less than great, they are good enough so that I keep going back, although each visit has a longer time in between. The Carne Asada Burritos and Carnitas Burritos are GREAT about 90% of the time. Also, their Fish Tacos are surprisingly good and are larger than you would ever expect. All in all, Alertos, especially for the VERY REASONABLE prices, is a place I will continue to spend money at when I have a craving for typical, inexpensive Fast Mexican food.

i loove the carne asada fries they make here. it's about 7 dollars and they put a whole lot of fries, onions, guacamole, cheese, sour cream, and carne asada. i haven't tried their burritos or tacos but my friends have and they always tell me its good BUUT nothing bets their carne asada fries. its a little bit of a drive for me but it's so worth it!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
